I'll be pulling for Winky, but I'd be happy with any outcome as long as it wasn't a robbery. If Winky won, HBO might pony up enough money for a Pavlik Wright fight. Winky already turned down $1.4 million and a cut of the PPV money for a Pavlik fight just last year. If Sturm wins, again, HBO might put up enough cash to make Pavlik/Sturm happen.
The Sturm fight looks more plausible as Kelly aims to clean out the Jr. Middleweight division. It's also interesting how Winky is willing to fight Sturm in Germany, but not Abraham. Never ceases to amaze me.[/quote] He refused to fight Abraham (and Kessler) about two years ago but I think he was willing to fight Abraham some months ago. Why didn't it happen? Of course - money, money, money...

I doubt Winky would get the $1.25 against Pavlik now.
Winky wanted Abraham last winter, and he had HBO's attention. Sauerland offered him significantly less than he had turned down for Pavlik, and then good old Sauerland made a fight with the great LuJaun Simon.
Wright might be past his prime but he'd still beat Sturm. This fight makes a lot of sense for Winky. If he goes and beats Sturm then he has more leverage when negotiating with Pavlik. If Winky goes and beats Sturm then he'd have enough momentum and activity to make for an interesting fight with Pavlik. I don't think he has enough left to beat Pavlik but its still a good fight. But, in the end, I don't see this fight even happening.
everyone would tell you im the biggest sturm hater on here...but he would beat winky at this stage in winkys career...hes done
I way disagree. Winky is past his prime but not a done fighter. Wright imo easily beat Sturm. Sturm is coming off a barely decision win over a journeymen.
One of the most interesting aspects of all this is the history. Team Pavlik tried to use Winky to build KP up before KP became a top fighter. Winky wouldn't give them the time of day. Can't blame Winky for not fighting a high risk/low reward prospect. After Kelly won the titles Winky started flapping his gums, and Arum told him to go beat Sturm and come back with something Kelly wants. Winky did nothing. A bit later Arum offered winky $1.4 million and a cut of the PPV. Winky turned it down. Now Winky is trying to get a fight with Sturm, which is what Arum told him to do in the first place!
Winky has sat around doing nothing for a year or two when he could have been making a case to be Pavlik's main rival. Then he lost to Williams and now he is in the position of needing Sturm. He simply doens't realize his economic value doesn't match his talent.
