he is also a talented guy but I think GGG would expose his flaws that being said Quinlan is still a very live opponent

Golovkin clearly has the potential to be great, it's a matter of opportunity. Haymon and I hate to bring in the business and political side of the sport, is signing tons of American fighters for his own agenda and this will prevent GGG from cleaning out the division. Which is sad. So far Haymon has Jermain Taylor, Kid Chocolate, and Daniel Jacobs. While I think it would be foolish to put Taylor in the ring with GGG that is now another belt holder who will freeze him out of the picture.

That actually seems like the most unconvincing argument or unexpected statement one could possibly make. Like the majority, I agree that Golovkin looks terrific and expect him to move to SMW (it's a fiction that he is a small MW and 179 cm combined with his age and strength/power make a step up a given) where the talent is better for some great fights in a year maybe two. But, it is the opposition he has faced that is not supportive of that "different way to look at it".

How could the greatest middles in history have been troubled with the opposition he's faced? The list seems terrible.

Rosada (while having certain merits as a fighter) was a JMW who moved up for his first fight at MW and given a title shot. Thing is he wasn't even the JMW champ so that is a suspect type win under the light of day.

Ishida (while he's grown into a big guy now) was - at the time - more of a JMW as he had just moved up for about a year and in his only two fights at MW had lost and he gets to fight for a major MW title on a two fight losing streak.

Proksa (has some ability) but he was needing a few shots to pin down the EBU before meeting Golovkin and he walks into a title fight for a major belt?

Macklin (while a legit MW) was never all that much (or much at all). He was another EBU level guy. Sure, he rose to the occasion and troubled Sturm and Martinez (but Sergio was already showing the signs in the Barker fight that 37 years was finally taking a real physical toll - especially as he had always been a small MW that left JMW because he could not because he had to - and giving away size in victory he still took some real wear and tear from the larger guys at MW). But, Macklin still lost those fights to Sturm and Martinez.

Stevens is a flawed product. It is always hard to be shorter than the division average. So to be successful you better bring some specific attributes in spades (ala Braxton/Qawi or Tyson at HW) if you are going to be something that matters. But his boxing is not especially sound and can't compensate for his lack of stature.

Geale (while a champion) is just not athletically gifted. You could round robin Geale, Macklin, and Barker and fall asleep for days. I doubt their slow feet, slow hands, poor movement, etc. would have made for guaranteed long fights with MW ATGs.

Maybe. We'll know for sure when he gets to SMW. There is not much at MW to speak of. The real test for any offensive fighter is how he handles a fighter that can actually bring their own offense and land shots back or first.

It was a great interview. Someone else had this cited before you so I had watched it earlier.

Julian's oldest son, sure seems like a great young guy. He did a laudable job in answering questions and leaving a great impression. I hope he turns out to be something.

The problem is .. I went and watched the few fights available (I know not much to work with and it should be said that a young guy is an unfinished product so he may make great strides looking into the future) and I was not really impressed with anything except he seemed to have good size and looked sturdy. He threw wide punches, real wide, left his chin up, and while not terrible, certainly wouldn't be a guy whose opinion carries a lot of weight based upon his own current abilities. He talked about his movement and speed so I was expecting to see something different than I saw.

That said, anyone can see that Gennady is well developed for power in his upper torso, shoulders, neck, arms and will be a great test for Ward in a year.

GGG doesn't have to move to super middle for almost two years. Let him handle his business at middleweight first. He has a good chance at getting Cotto/Canelo winner in ring. After that fight he can move up.

He's definitely one of the hardest punchers in the division's history.

Like any fighter you can be certain that he and his management will try and keep him in the lowest division he can safely make as long as possible. So that absolutely may be the case.

But, I am not convinced that there are any (ANY) good fights coming to him in these two years. I expect that neither Cotto or Canelo and their management will be looking for him and if Gennady doesn't get those fights he will be 34 still looking for a meaningful win. Assuming Cotto fights Canelo the loser won't be interested for a while (or ever). If Cotto wins he will find a way to meet someone else. Maybe Floyd goes up for a last fight - rematch - and a SRL-like MW title one-off. With Chavez going to SMW there is little left for Golovkin if he can't get those two.

Quillen will be the most he gets for hanging around two more years.

The challenges wait for him at SMW.

He's at his physical peak right now. Ward is slightly younger (two years) and peak as well.

A chance perhaps? But I seriously don't think he'd beat him.

Resume wise god no, H2H quite possibly. I don't have any serious question marks about his skills, how legit his power is, chin, etc but fact remains he hasn't fought a truly elite fighter and i would like to see that to get a really accurate gauge.

Agreed although i do think his 17 straight KO's are impressive. He may not be fighting great fighters but he's fought alot of decent to solid contenders and absolutely mangled them including guys who have never been knocked down or stopped before.

if the WBA did have any integrity the only thing that would have changed is Sturm would have been forced to vacate like a eunich same way N'Dam did. Seriously look at these events...

    - Sturm pays WBA bribe money so he can be elevated to Super Champion and avoid Golovkin (according to promoter Ahmet Oner who was working with Sturm at the time, apparently Oner provided bank statements on German TV to prove Sturm payed the money for this)

    - N'Dam is supposed to fight GGG for vacant WBA Regular title but turns it down. He's rewarded for his cowardice by being awarded an interm title.

    - They then offered Mundine to fight for the WBA regular title in Australia and he turns it down too (this was 2010 after he just beat Geale).

    - N'Dam backs out of 2 or 3 more proposed fights against him and finally in 2012 after 2 years when Golovkin signs with K2 and has some backing the WBA force unification....N'Dam vacates the interm belt.

What you're saying is all true but not his fault either, frustrating to watch to say the least.GGG/Rubio is for the WBC interm belt and If Cotto beats Canelo he'll vacate rather than fight him no doubt. If these ABC's lived by their rules Golovkin would have unified the division via cowards dropping belts. Hopefully the WBA/IBF/WBC stick to their word and we get unification tournaments in 2015 that would help Golovkin's cause tremendously, Cotto vacates, Jacobs probably vacates, Taylor vacates...actually Taylor is probably crazy and brain damaged enough to think he can win..if he isn't in prison.

I do think Golovkin will have some fights at 168 in the next couple years which would be great but i wouldn't want to see him permanently move up. In terms of legacy the current MW's won't do much for him and guys like Cotto, Quillin, Jacobs aren't going to fight him but i do think in one year that will start changing thanks to the new blood. Obviously getting Canelo next year would be massive, Korobov would be willing to fight him and depending if he gets a belt while looking good in the process it could be meaningful, prospects most of whom are being fast tracked like Murata, Khytrov, Derevyanchenko, Quigley, etc. MW should have something to offer over the next several years especially if the ABC's go to one world champion like they're claiming and the only path leads through him.

    LOL.

Beating a string of BUMs, STIFFs, TOMATO CANs, No Hopers and NEVER WEREs gets the Triple Duck lots of mileage around here...

I'd say yes he's top 50 all-time but he's definitely not top 50 among active middleweights.

I agree with this analysis except top 5. I really believe golovkin is truly a special fighter. He's extremely tough with cannons in both arms. Unfortunately he'll be ridiculed again next saturday after he stops rubio.
