I'm not one that thinks GGG is top 50 (but I also think that such choices should be left to posterity) and he does lack any elite names on his resume which is the main argument against him, but I think you may be downplaying the qualities of those he has fought a little. Rosado was actually a mando challenger @ JMW riding a solid streak and despite being a JMW is actually bigger than GGG in both height and weight on fight night. Ishida had been fighting @ MW for 2 years, only having dropped back down for PWill two fights prior to Golovkin. Again at 6'1.5" he's also a big guy - and durable (though I agree, not that good). Stevenson is limited but was thought to have the power and handspeed to at least ask some questions of Golovkin. Who I do think you're considerably underating are Geale and Macklin - both of whom beat a world level talent in Sturm, and both of whom had consistantly appeared in top 5 rankings at MW over an extended period. True, neither are elite, but it's somewhat revisionist to claim that Macklin wasn't much good (or that he was small - he's almost exactly the same size as GGG, and pretty average for a MW) and it's almost universally accepted that he did beat Sturm. And Geale's lack of athleticism? Hell did that come from? He's known for his speed stamina and movement. OK aside from Sturm he hasn't beaten anyone from the top tier, but he has a solid rack of victories at least as good as many of GGGs and had only two razor thin disputable SDs against him. Again I'm not trying to argue he's got a top 50 resume, but aside from the lack of at least one elite name, it ain't bad either. I think GGGs main problem now (in legacy terms) is simply the lack of any significant marquee names @MW with the fading of Maravilla. Maybe if he can get Cotto or Canelo in the ring it would help, but in both cases (less so Canelo who fights heavier than GGG anyway) their JMW origins might detract from a victory. Problem, with Froch and Kessler close to retirement there ain't really any legacy names @ SMW either except for Ward, who I'm confident GGG will fight at some point but doesn't look like happening anytime soon. And finally, the question was about his MW status - what he does if he moves to SMW will have no bearing anyway. His best bet for becoming an ATG MW will be to simply to hang around at 160 until some of the many somewhat overgrown JMWs who have been draining in the hope of big money fights start to move up and challenge for the MW titles.
Who the hell has he beaten. Give me one name that would crack the top 50 middleweights mark in history?
Thanks for the reply. You know boxing. But the question is how many past greats would have looked as good, not how good were the opponents. Perhaps GGG made them look ordinary. The question is how many past middles would have looked as good? I think the answer less than 5 in history.
What would the top middleweights of alltime have done to be more impressive against the opposition that GGG fought and destroyed ? Flatten these guys before they put up their dukes ?.Of course it is too early to rate Golovkin with the elite MWs of alltime based on his opposition, but based purely what he brings into the ring this man is something SPECIAL....Give the man his due for he is terribly impressive thus far...
If he's in the top 50's he's in the very end of it. However he has a chance to carve his own niche and become great.
Possibly h2h ability wise but it's yet to be proven. Resume wise which is what counts at the end of a career he is not top 100.
Would be a stretch to say below average, but he ain't particularly fast. Has very good timing however - which is probably more important than raw speed.
