Loma get all the media attention and recognition for winning the 3rd World title in his 12 pro fight. This weekend Naoya Inoue fights Jamie McDonnell for WBA 118 lb title in his 16 pro fight and possible 3rd World title in what would be a a milestone achievement.
We are only a few days away from the highly anticipated match up between Japanese star Naoya Inoue (15-0, 13) [井上 尚弥] and WBA "regular" Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell (29-2-1-1, 13) and today the two fighters went through some basic medical check ups and had certain measurementa taken. At the medical the fighters natural size differences were really clear with McDonnell havign the edge in every physical department. He was over 10 cm taller than Inoue, boasted an 11.4cm reach advantage a thicker neck and a thicker chest. Whilst the natural size difference would have come as no surprise, given that Inoue began his career at Light Flyweight and McDonnell has been a large Bantamweight for years, it did still look like the men were still several divisions apart, and weren't set to clash this coming Friday. At the medical the Ohashi camp did request that McDonnell took part in an additional weight check, an issue to try and combat the recent spate of failed weigh ins in the country, which have effected fighters like Luis Nery, Daigo Higa, Coach Hiroto and a string of others on the domestic scene, but the team of the Englishman refused. The fact it isn't compulsary means they could turn it down, but it didn't seem to help with the worries the Ohashi camp have, and have had for a little while. Although McDonnell is claiming he can make weight weight comfortable he and his team have complained about making the Bantamweight limit in the past and he took on a lot of water at yesterday's public work out, leaving some to query just how he is going to look on, and weigh in at, on the scales. http://www.asianboxing.info/asian-n...-significant-size-advantages-over-naoya-inoue
Few interesting stories again from Japan- Kenichi Ogawa has been given a 1 year ban from the JBC for his failed drug test Vs Tevin Farmer. The ban will run until December 2018. Incredibly that's TWICE the length of the one the NSAC gave him. The JBC ain't messing about this yearm, and have now given two indefinite bans, this year long one, and others are expected in the near future! Kenichi Ogawa given 1 year suspension by JBC Both Satoshi Shimizu (6-0, 6) and Akira Yaegashi (26-6, 14) will return to the ring on August 28th at the Korakuen Hall. Shimizu will make his third defense of the OPBF Featherweight title, facing off with Shingo Kawamura (16-3-1, 8) in a pretty simple looking defense of the Olympic bronze medal winner. Yaegashi on the otheer hand will face former 2-time world title challenger Hirofumi Mukai (16-5-3, 6) in a 10 round "survival bout". Satoshi Shimizu and Akira Yaegashi to return on August 28th! Former world title challenger Yoshinori Takahashi (26-4, 11), who is best known for his 1964 fight with Eddie Perkins, passed away last week at the age of 79. He had previously battled cancer. As a fighter Takahashi saw his career, which lasted only a few short years, end early due to an eye issue. Following his fighting career he opened a gym and lead Royal Kobayashi, Leopard Tamakuma and Celes Kobayashi to world titles. Yoshinori Takahashi dies, aged 79 On Sunday Kenichi Horikawa (36-15-1, 10) scored his 36th professional win in 52 bouts. He is now tied on wins, with Akinori Watanabe, for most wins by a currently active Japanese born fighter, both fighter are however behind JBC licenses Jorge Linares. Horikawa became the outright leader for the most bouts by an active Japanese fighter (he was tied with 2 others in 51). Kenichi Horikawa claims win in 52nd professional bout! Japanese Youth Super Bantamweight champion Takuya Mizuno (14-1-1, 12) will make his third title defense on July 29th as he goes up against Jinya Ito (7-3-1, 2). This bout will headline a card which features the debut of Konshin Takeshima (0-0), who was an amateur stand out and is expected to accomplish a serious amount in the professional ranks. Takuya Mizuno to defend Japanese Youth title on July 29th!
