NO, with 4 months between fights he is a S-MW / L-HW, Nunn, Roy, Cal and Co, damn near all of them were either side 190lbs plus, before training for their next fights, that's the Size of Todays L-HWs. Louis would do it exactly as his peers for whatever era you place him.
I suspect that eventually a Conn or a Godoy figure would emerge, who had the right style to trouble him, but was just a little bit better than they were. They would take his title, and he would take it back in the rematch. The problem is, I have no idea who it would be.
Fair point. '64 Ali had the right style to trouble Louis but not sure he pulls off the win against a peak Joe Louis. The Brown Bomber isn't going out like that. He's not gonna quit and had quicker hands than Liston. Sonny wasnot in good fighting condition in Miami Beach.
He didn't lose to Walcott and he was clearly past his prime by then. Younger Louis would beat Walcott.
Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Lyle, Holmes, Witherspoon, Tucker, Tyson, Bowe, Holyfield, Morrison, Lewis, Moorer, the K brothers, Fury - they all beat Louis. Even the limited Wilder beats him.
I'm not sure on this, I really think Walcott's style is too unpredictable and elusive for Louis, it would at the least be a very competitive fight. But arguably Walcott was in his very late prime, by the same measure.
Well, Louis stopped Walcott in rematch cleanly and his reflex was much slower at that point. Louis lost a lot out of his quality during WW II, he was much better before the break. So clearly diminished verison of Louis still solved and knocked out prime Walcott. Walcott was never better than during Louis fights. Comparing ages isn't fair, because Louis spent more than decade of fighting against the best of the world. Walcott reached his peak during Louis fights. He wasn't better when he was younger.
Here is a fun thought. @cross_trainer could he lose weight? Because if he can take advantage of the SC guys and shed some pounds and a bit of water he could be a huge 175lber not unlike Moorer and wait out undesirable challenges like say maybe Fury or a Mike Tyson?
I think he could make LHW early on. If his training was catered to that early. He'd probably be a lesser fighter for it but it's plausible. He'd be a Moorer figure at LHW. Though indisputably better by a huge margin. Brief, dominant, invulnerable and sickening to watch.
