Well for one, I imagine the "Dempsey was the GOAT" talks will be resurrected.

 

The time travel aspect is the most reasonable to me.

Tunney outboxing Ali of 67 seems far more preposterous.

 

I would assume I'm in one of Cross Trainer's wacky hypotheticals and then wake up.

 

For starters, I’d be wrong about believing Ali would outbox Tunney.

Tunney is about the most "modern" of the relatively ancients, so we could still preserve some parts of orthodox "wisdom".
He also gets much more credit for boxing so well with few prior examples.

But we would have to wonder at least if those who gave him a good fight or even beat him-like a past prime Greb, who was smaller than Tunney-were, despite having a very different style, also better than we thought.

Smaller fast fighters could give Ali some problems, but even a near prime Ali legitimately beat Doug Jones.
In his prime, I do not see any smaller boxer type getting more than 1/4 of the rounds-if Ali really tried his best, & if he did not stop his opponent.

So if Tunney could clearly best a prime Ali with zero extenuating circumstances, we would have to reassess both how good those old timey fighters were-at least with more modern styles, but ALSO consider that their style might have been near ideal for their rule set & how it was enforced...

AND we would have to question how much of an advantage size really is!

 

Gene Tunney has gained access to time travel. This is detrimental to the legacy of heavyweight boxing.

If I witnessed Ali of 67' lose disastrously to Gene Tunney the first thing I'd do is put the pipe down and go have myself a cry. After that I would pick the pipe back up to cope. Tunney has literally changed the game, there is no chance he stops after defeating 67' Ali.

Discussions would be only of how Tunney used his time machine to dominate the heavyweight division in a chronological gauntlet for the ages through this same forum of time travel. Gene who is now immortal and does not age, builds himself up against no name champions like Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, all of who he stopped in their first defense of the title. Every heavyweight champion in history now has a loss to Gene Tunney, Marciano has lost his 0. Every champion is a paper champ, there is only Gene Tunney.

Tyson Fury is the current champion of the division, there are talks he should fight Usyk or Joshua. Instead he chooses Dillian Whyte. Fatal mistake. Fury approaches the ring believing he will fight Dillian Whyte. Wrong. Gene Tunney has shown up in his time machine, instead of fighting Dillian Whytehe must face the anachronistic monster Gene Tunney. Fury knew this day would come, he had seen the film of all the champions Gene had defeated and he has feared it, he now knows for certain he has run out of time but in the face of certain doom he puts forth a valiant effort. Tunney is too strong, he is too fast, too short.

Round one, Tunney slips Fury's left jab and throws a counter right hook--- it lands perfectly flush and Fury falls to the canvas--- Gene Tunney has accidentally killed Tyson Fury. The crowd erupts in screams, police storm the ring but not before Tunney slips into his time machine off the wreck havoc the next time a champion arises. Gene Tunney has become some sort of time lord, a god of not just boxing but of men's fate. Tyson Fury's loss was not his fault it was fate.

Tunney cannot be stopped.

 

Honestly, It wouldn't surprise me even a little.

 

Nobody else feels this way.
Except among the most dedicated & biased fans of Ye Olde Tymers, most everyone would be unlikely to not be surprised if a peak form & effort Ali lost handily to Tunney.

So why do you feel this way?
Do you believe that no fast & skilled boxer Ali faced was nowhere as good as Tunney?
For example, you believe Tunney would beat any Patterson? If so, why?

We'd have had to go back to the drawing board re assessing fights and fighters. No disrespect to Gene who was one of the most skilled and technical heavyweights of the first half of the twentieth century but a victory over Ali would've been quite a shocker,albeit not one of the biggest in boxing history by any means.
