exactly. while i rank shavers power as in the upper echelons of the sport, guys like Tyson, even Ray Robinson, had such great understandings of using their opponents motion against them, and phenomenal punch selection (of course Robinson ranks above tyson in these categories imo) will always compensate and compete, compared to guys like Shavers and Wilder.

 

That’s a fact Ferg! It seems that everyone literally did love Earnie. He was an uber nice guy - not a bad word ever said about him. I would’ve partaken in a phantom punch fix - not just because Shavers was cool guy - but also because I wouldn’t want my head torn off.

He also visited Ken Norton in the hospital, when he passed. A true gentleman.

 

I shudder thinking about Chisora eating that amount of punches over three fights from Shavers instead of Fury.

Norton had a funny story relating to when Ali visited him (Ali being one of the first visitors) after his car accident.

During the visit Ali was doing his magic tricks, one after another. Ken said he truly appreciated and respected Ali for coming in to see him but at some point Ken more or less said “If you do one more damn trick I’m gonna kill you!”. Lol.

I assume Earnie didn’t try to bedazzle Ken with similar feats of magic. Haha.

 

Not sure if Shavers visited Norton after the car accident. I know he visited him after his final hospitalization which he unfortunately didn't make it out of. Not sure what the issue was off the top of my head, but I seem to remember it was a stroke (likely caused by the aforementioned car accident).

I get what you're saying but then, think about David Tua and Tyson, both were shorter than even Ernie, and had taller guys in Hell consistently. Also, Tua in particular was actually not a very heavy HW until probably midway through his career, he was hovering around Evander's weight for comparison. I don't think Shavers would've ever went the CW option.
