maybe with the layoff and change of trainers this guy may pull the upset but i doubt kirkland will retire
I wouldn't go that far, but he's outclassed bigtime in this fight. The problem with Raines is that he either beats up on TPS-level bums or jumps all the way to world class to take on guys like Lemieux or Kirkland. He'd be better off trying to take on mid-range guys and maybe get into contention for a regional title like the NABF belt or something.
Raines got a new contract at 158.....reports still abound that Kirkland will not be lower than 160. I bet weight is the controversy in this fight. The stuff in the ring will settle itself. I expect Raines to improve his stock no matter what. What Hearns did to him was out of the ordinary. What he did to Joe Greene in the 7th and 8th rounds of their 8 rounder made me wish it had been 10 or 12 rounds. Raines took a skilled southpaw like him in a last minute switch and actually had enough talent to beat his arse down the home stretch a good bit. If Raines last and makes Kirkland look bad, it will be called rust. If Kirkland whoops him quick he will just have beaten a bum....that's what people will say. Raines is actually a decent test. He has a slim chance to win. Has a good chance to improve his name and maybe get more fights like this down the road. As long as he comes out of this with his health, he has nothing to lose career wise and everything to gain. He's training like an animal from what I hear.
I was at Raines' fight against Hearns, who isn't nearly the puncher or boxer that Kirkland is, and Hearns put him to sleep in the first round. I honestly think that not only isn't this a test, but it also isn't going to help Kirkland get rid of the ring rust. It will, however, make for a good highlight.
