I have, myself, been a dumbass in the past by saying Demetrious Johnson was an average champion. But his last few wins, especially the one last night against Reis, has really hit home - Demetrious Johnson is the GOAT in MMA period. He just submitted a guy with ease who has never been submitted. He made the guy look like an amateur on the feet and on the ground. Absolute legend.
He didn't submit him with ease. He beat him up and used the arm bar to finish him off as he went to protect himself.
He outmuscled and out struck him on the ground. It was a dominant performance. But the submission hype is a bit overstated, it could just as easily been a TKO win if the ground and pound would have continued.
When you can out grapple a guy like that who is a high level grappler and also know not to go into half guard with him because his half guard sweeps are sick.. thats when you know you're sick
Wrestlers and BJJ men have had grappling battles since MMA evolved into actual MMA, this ain't a new development. There are plenty of none black belts who have out grappled black belts, are all of them goats as well?
Well if he is the GOAT as you say then after his next title defense which would give him the all time ufc record he should move up to 135 and test himself against the elite few guys up there. Lets see how he would go against Cruz, Dillashaw, Garbrandt. Imo he is not the GOAT.
I'd like to see DJ Vs Garbrandt at 125 for the record, then a rematch (if DJ wins) at 135 for the BW belt.
Yea but no one has been as dominant as DJ in their division. Silva had harder times in his dominance.
That being said Wanderlei Silva from 03-05 is probably the most dominant champion in history. Fedor isn't far behind.
As much as i love Fedor, he never fought the best of the best. i just love how DJ can still do it even after USADA have been cracking down. He wasnt just a great champ when it was easy to take steds, he's a great champ when its a lot harder to take steds. Silva, Jones, Wanderlei - all done for steds. Edit: i know wanderlei wasnt done for steds but fleeing a drugs test is pretty good evidence towards it
Fedor did beat Nog, Cro Cop and Coleman who were 3 of the best in history at the point he beat them. He also beat Randleman, Herring, Sylvia and Arlovski. Beating Overeem, Lesnar and Couture would have been excellent though.
