Big, strong, fast, talented kid. Who because he spent so much time in the Amateurs has no concept of timing, distance, range, and when to step it up in a fight.

Same thing we see with guys like Berto, Khan(early on in his career), the Peterson brothers, Alexander, and others.

The Amateur system is ruining boxing. Its not the same sport anymore. Tessitore and Ward discussed this. Its one of the reasons im glad that Peter Quillin doesnt have an amateur background. There is nothing he could have learned in the Amateurs that he isnt learning right now from Freddie Roach.

Seriously if I had a kid who looked like a future prospect, I'd get him maybe 50 bouts and immediately turn him pro so as not to ruin him.

shouldn't it be the trainer's job to move him off of Amateur tendencies?

I don't think it's the amateur system itself, but spending too much time in it. It'll shorten guys' pro careers, and if they get too used to winning with bad habits, it's alot harder to fix what you've been doing in 250 amateur fights in 25 pro fights. Which is why a young guy like Alexander can't seem to improve and may have already peaked (or is close to it).

that's more than most pros fight in the amateurs and enough to develope those amateur tendencies you want them to get away from..

unless he's about to fight in the olympics or panam games or any other big time amateur competition boxers dont need to stick around in the amateurs they can turn pro with just a couple of fights

    :hat

Quillin? Why the hell did you use him as an example, of all people? Oh, because he's black. Duh.

Gamboa doesn't seem to have struggled to make the change...Rigondeaux isn't doing badly either...Ward's another one who's done well...

    Right!

So instead of blaming the amateur system, maybe "we" should stop to think.

So many(maybe most) good and great fighters come up through extensive amateur backgrounds. So maybe we should give the "system" credit.

I do admit that many fighters do come out of the amateurs "wrong" and that only a handful do go from one to the other excellently...but it's the American system that is failing, it's why Americans at the Olympics in recent years have been...awful

Yeah i know the Americans like to blame the current scoring system and rules for their lack of success, but other countries have been able to cope with the rules and scoring and go on to produce good pros, so the American system needs to blame no one but itself.

Amateur boxing used to be a lot better when they didn't make them wear headgear and stop fights at the drop of a hat.
