Demian Maia drops to welterweight Former middleweight contender Demian Maia is dropping to welterweight, the fighter revealed Wednesday on Twitter. "Guys, now I will be moving down to 170 pounds," Maia tweeted. "Next fight I will be a welterweight." Holder of a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Maia once fought for the UFC middleweight title. He lost by unanimous decision to 185-pound champion Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in April 2010. Since coming up short in his bid for that title, Maia (15-4) has struggled to regain top-contender status. He has lost two of his three most recent fights, including a unanimous decision to highly touted middleweight prospect Chris Weidman on Jan. 28. UFC has not announced when Maia will make his 170-pound debut or whom he is likely to face. http://espn.go.com/mma/story/_/id/7686488/demian-maia-drops-welterweight-division
Good move but he needs to add a bit more to his game. Stand up is still bad but much better and he still can't get the fight to the ground enough.
Akiyama, Maia etc You have to question what their commitment was like when suddenly they can drop FIFTEEN POUNDS SOUTH!
Maia has never been a MW and I've been saying it for years... sadly as I mentioned a month or so back I think he is done :verysad Lynchburg
