When Dempsey was on the rise towards the title, he fought a man by the name of Willie Meehan. Meehan was basically a journeyman type fighter, and of there 5 meetings Dempsey acquired only one true win, while drawing in 2 of them, and losing the remaining 2. This awefully poor for an all time great to have on his record.
I don't think it's too much of a blemish. Meehan did have a good chin and was rarley stopped within four rounds, which was the scheduled time for all of their matches, I think. Actually, the only times he was stopped inside 4 rounds was by Tommy Gibbons and Billy Miske. By the way, do we really need another thread criticising Dempsey? aren't there like two or three active at the moment?
My ignorance? You're the one who so generously just hands out a #5 rating to a champion who didn't show a trace of a title defense for three years, and built up a record consisting mostly of mediocrities. I've been laughing all morning at your feeble attempts to make Billy Miske look like a worthy contender. Please go touch up on your boxing knowledge and come back when you're ready for a real debate.
In all seriousness, what the young fellow says is factually accurate. Disagree with his conclusion, but why call him ignorant?
I appreciate the assistance. And I hope that people know that I'm not a Dempsey hater, but certain details should be pointed out.
Because he dosnt want to learn. He is using his interpretation of the bout to suport a given view point and if I can tell him any facts that can contradict that he dosnt want to know. That is the deepest form of ignorance.
Fine then start providing your insites rather than insulting, and maybe I'll change my tune. So far, all I've heard from anyone is that these fights were all ehibitions and robberies. Personally, I find it hard to believe that boxrec would have everyone of their 5 meetings listed as valid pro fights, if they were ALL exhibitions. Nevertheless, I'm ready to put all bias asside of you have something to offer.
Firstly I apologise for insulting you. A lot of harsh words have been thrown on this topic and I have taken the brunt of most of them so I came down on you harder than I should. Boxrec is full of errors and quite often lists exhibitions as pro fights. It dosnt help that there was a fine line between them then. I think that this was technicaly a pro fight but it would not have meant as much as if it had been a 10 rounder. The newspaper reports that I have seen suggest that Dempsey should have got the decision. Billy Miske and Willie Mehen are fascinating fighters in their own right outside of their fights with Dempsey.
Fair enough, I agree that boxrec is a bit spotty, and not always accurate. Its shameful that we can't get our hands on footage of all these fights,
Yeah, he should search and research books and records until someone, somewhere, probably related to Dempsey, says one of Jack's losses "might" have been debatable and he "possibly" had flu anyway, despite 30 other 'neutral' sources saying otherwise. Then, if they don't find it, lie about it anyway.
