Didn't mean to start a witch hunt, that's just the way I read the phrase "not so subtle preference for white fighters"... It seems there has been a lot of lazy labeling of fighters round here lately and such a claim really needs more substantiation than a fight where some thought a black fighter won and others seemed to think the decision for the white fighters was just. And if that was not your intent, I apologize for the tangent. Could be the hangover talking...
Dempsey scored 7 rounds even? I find that rather odd. Note that Dempsey was a native Utah man, just like Layne.
You hurt my damn feelings. I derive much entertainment when you attack other posters and now I have to contend with the sorry fact that you proved me a hypocrite. I love Dempsey unconditionally. If I ever have a son I'd seriously consider naming him "Dempsey" and with "Toledo" as a last name that would be something. For the record, I would not go so far as to call him the "r" word despite a few things that raised my reluctant eyebrow. So go make yourself a Manhattan on me ...and jump all over someone else so's I can have joy to ease the pain.
It doesn't follow that because he did a decent thing he is a prince among men, but I sense that you have deep feelings against Jeffries and Dempsey and I'm too old to really go there in a debate. Have a good day.
I'm 63 , how old do you have to be to refrain from stating your point of view? You are wrong, I mean what I said about Dempsey. I believe he was a good guy, a rough and ready man, who had good instincts and through exposure to genteel society ,lost his rough edges and became a warm hearted character, and a positive statesman for the fight game, he is also easily my favourite fighter and ranks no 3 on my heavyweight ATG list, [above Louis]! I don't think you will find a post of my knocking him in my 15,000 efforts.:huh Jim Jeffries was a fine champ,a man who disliked the common herd and avoided it ,unless there were $$$$ involved ,[rather like a later successor, Willard,] . Jeffries was kind to Tom Sharkey, when he was on his uppers and helped Fitz out on several occasions. I believe he was a racist , but no more or less than most of his times, Because of his position as the Champion, his racism was more exposed , and the consequences of it more far reaching.
I may be wrong , but I have always understood that Layne was something of a protege of Dempsey's? This content is protected Perhaps it was just that they came from the same area, and so were linked together?
That's what i thought as well, Dempey spoke VERY highly of Layne and called him along the lines of "Greatest current heavyweight" before the Marciano bout and tipped him to both beating Marciano and being the next champ.
I apologize. I misinterpreted your meaning. I took you as being sarcastic. I am sorry for mistinterpreting you.
