Watching this fabulous film provided by Smooth Legends Youtube account I can't help but ask why Dempsey refused to almost ever jab his way inside ? He had a substantial reach at 77" or so .. wouldn't he have been so much more effective ? I know in the Tunney rematch he actually jabbed his way in to the body on occasion .. Fantastic footage, thanks for posting! I am embarrassed to say I haven't really checked out either Dempsey or Carpentier on film before. First thoughts, not sure about the weight difference but it looks like a battle between a heavyweight and a middleweight. Having said that I am impressed by both and it was a good fight. I don't know if Carpentier was forced to fight or decided he wanted to rip the title from Dempsey but he certainly went for it. He looked like he could have boxed his way to a few more round, but Dempsey's relentless pressure forced him to battle? I feel if you were in the crowd it would have been the 1920s Hagler vs Hearns! Dempsey must have had a head like concrete as some of those right hands from Carpentier would have felled an ox. Carpentier had decimated a whole generation of European fighters with that right! I can imagine the crowd going "ooh and ahhh"! Reminded me a bit of Pryor vs Argüello where Alexis threw his famous right expecting Aaron to fold and it just bounced off, must have been really dispiriting! I like Carpentier's style but it seems like a more old fashioned one to Dempsey, I flag this due to my other thread about which old champs fighters had a "modern" style and I think Jack does. I sort of understand the Dempsey legend more now, he must have been strong as a horse and hit like a truck. Poor George's face is a mess from the first round so Jack must have been hitting with bad intentions from the first second!
Amazing footage. Thanks for posting. Carpartenier really was fast. And nimble. But he had nothing to keep Jack honest.
Really like how Dempsey has the left shoulder up high and rolls with the right hands the way Duran would
