I heard a rumor that he used to smack his first wife around. She was rumored to have been a 'lady of the evening' and young Dempsey was acting as her pimp. These are just rumors of course and Dempsey was in dire circumstances at the time so anything is possible. Dempsey was a hard as nails individual who was trying to survive at that juncture.

Is that it? You're kidding me. You just found that out? That story's been floating around since Roosevelt wore short pants.

There is nothing wrong with Jack Dempsey's legacy. Janitor is obviously a hater.

Dempsey was extremely active defending his title 5 times in 7 years. Additionally he fought stellar opposition in Firpo, Willard, Miske, Carpentier, Brennan, gibbons and Darcy ( awesome record ). He showed great heart after being knocked through the ropes by a very talented Luis Firpo, to comeback and destroy him. Dempsey is often unduely criticized for not fighting black men, but who cares? Harry Wills was not the best contender around at the time anyway. Dempsey was also wise for taking a full three years off in the middle of his reign to persue some of the most attractive female celebrities of the time. This gave his body ample rest, and should probably have been benchmarked as an example for future champions to follow. Dempsey should be rated above those other wanna be's such as Louis, Ali, Tyson, Holmes and Lewis. They just don't fit the bill as an all time great of Dempsey's calibur......The End......

Firpo was telented?? He was swinging wild. Any one can do that if they had the chin for it of couse. Nothing that Butterbean cant do.

Dempsey was NOT active as champ. He may have defended the title 5 times for 7 years, BUT he took nearly 5 years off.

First he starts off active with wins over Ko Bill, Carp and Miske, Ok he starts off well as a active champion. But NOOO

He takes 2 years off. Than decides to defend against Gibbions and Firpo. Takes 3 years off after that, than comes Gene Tunney.
He was one of the MOST lease active champions we had.
Louis, Marciano, Charles, Walcott, Patterson, Jeff, Johnson, Lewis, Tyson, Holmes, Ali, yell EVEN Gene Tunney were more active as Champions than Dempsey was.

Apparently, there are still some on this forum who can't detect sarcasm, even when its painfully obvious.....

I am tired of these topics being repated. For starters there have been atleast 5 "Dempsey vs Louis" threads over the past 5 months or so. Its so boring. We have discussed these topics for sooo long, its aint worth it anymore.

Five threads regarding Louis vs Dempsey is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the fall of last year, there has to have been at least 40 threads discussing Dempsey in one aspect or another. He was a good champion who set a lot of standards for the sport, but its time for us to leave it at that and move on. I don't necessarily think a man needs to be rated in the top 10 to be considered great, and for those who do have him in their top 10, he shouldn't be. His resume simply does not warrant it, and merely preceding other great champions does not automatically give him a pass as being better. There are many double standards that are set by those who rate him highly. Most of the same people ate Larry Holmes alive for refusal to fight Greg Page, but somehow come up with all sorts of excuses for Dempsey not fighting Wills and only defending his title 5 times in 7 years, whereas Holmes held his crown through 19 defenses in the same duration, plus stayed unbeaten through 48 fights to the near age of 36. If these same people have Holmes at such ratings as #6, #8, #10, etc, then Dempsey is surely not top 10.

The thing I dislike about this forum is the partisan nature of the debates and some of the postors.
Janitor seems to be holding back on telling this snippet of information because it's great ammo for "the Dempsey critics".
It seems that some of the best full-timers here are actually identified as being concerned with either robust defenses or damning indictments of certain "flash point" fighters, Dempsey being the foremost example.
It's a shame we cant just absorb and share all the info, and then voice our assessments without it descending into fanaticism on both sides.
