Does this 18 second massacre still exist, does ESPN have the footage, anyone know where this footage might be now? the reason i ask is because this fight is seen as Dempsey when he was at his absolute best. Any info on the 1920 billy miske bout would also be appreciated...
fulton was supposed to have fought willard instead of dempsey and he was a heavy favourite too. fred 'the plasterer' fulton you're right...it was filmed....its out in the world somewhere..
Maybe, maybe not. Brief footage of Dempsey-Miske used to be on youtube, but it was only the very beginning of the fight. Perhaps extensive film exists somewhere, atleast it is listed in the Big Fights Inc. collection.
I'd like to see it. But however great and primed a fighter might look in a fight like this, there's only so much you can learn about a fighter from an 18 second blow-out. There's only so much a fighter can prove with such a performance too.
It's also possible that if filmed for distribution, the footage may have been destroyed as no one would pay to see an 18 second fight. That's why the likes of Jack Johnson and even Dempsey would carry some opponents.
ESPN/BigFights does not have the Miske or Fulton fights. I have spoken with Steve Lott who curated the collection about this. I myself uncovered the only actual fight footage of Dempsey-Miske, which is very short. There is other film of the training and the fighters squaring off. The film continues until just after the bell rings for the first round. The fighters move forward and it cuts off before the first exchange. The clip I have continues almost from where the known film leaves off, you get to see the first exchange which is a lead left hook by Miske (a photo also exists of this punch) but cuts off soon after.
Amazing stuff, I find these stories of lost films and hidden snippets fascinating. Would love for some well preserved unseen treasure trove of footage to be discovered
the miske fight was on youtube at one point, i wonder if the whole fight exists somewhere. ive seen photos of the fulton bout and ive heard it was destroyed, but you never know. and yes it would be great loads of rare footage would show up, boxing fans would go nuts...
Up Klomptons ass crack. Rumor has it, if you sniff it long enough, you might get to see a frame or two.
Wasn't there a clip of Galento knocking someone flat into the ring that used to make it's rounds around these forums? I remember years ago it was lost, and nobody has been able to find it or re upload it.
I'm just trying to see if new footage has been found since this thread started. I'm not badgering klompton he's not the only film collector/seeker on here. Although he is quite knowledgeable on the subject. Would love to see some more Dempsey footage surface one day.
"fred 'the plasterer' fulton " Was that actually his nickname? Maybe "the steam engine" would have been more apposite.
Alas, I suspect this film has about as much chance of turning up as Shakespeare's original hand-written manuscripts. Is it even definitively known that this was filmed?
