The two bouts with Dempsey were Tunney's only fights in the past 21 months. Dempsey at least had the Sharkey bout in between the first fight with Tunney. Gene had been boxing as a pro for over a decade as well and was in the twilight of his own career. Being the naturally smaller man would also somewhat negate the advantages he seems to have had.

You're selling these wins a bit short.

Most people seem to favour Dempsey. That's fine. What's undeniable is that Greb had great success versus common opponents and thrashed guys Dempsey would go on to meet afterwards. It's also the case that it is possible to find people who saw - or fought - both fighters in prime that picked Greb.

I believe Greb had a live chance, and I don't see any reason to assign any kind of retrospective win over Greb for Dempsey given that Greb tended to do as well against the guys Dempsey fought as Dempsey did - usually only after Greb had thrashed them.

    Yeah.

People seem to be trying to write Dempsey off as shot, even, in some cases currently. Seems odd.

El, you got the wrong Tunney...You claim tunney had no fights for 21 months bvefore fighting Dempsey Sept 23,1926...Hmm, let us see...
    1-Dec 29,1925,Ko Dan O'Dowd
    2-Nov 18,1925 W-johnny risko
    3-June 5,1925 Tommy Gibbons ko
    4-May 27,1925 Harry Greb ND
So, in about 15 months before the absolute prime Tunney fought Jack
Dempsey Sept 23,1926, tunney at 28 years of age fought FOUR times'in 15 months, prior to fighting Dempsey and in the proicess knocking out tommy Gibbons for Gibbons only ko loss in 106 fights. So, Thge older Dempsey who, hadn't a fight in over Three years while the younger
razor sharp tunney had FOUR bouts in the past 15 months.
    I rest my case EL...

I wish this fight would have happened. I would pick Dempsey of course, but Greb has a chance for upset. Greb had amazing stamina, a top level chin, great speed, good defense, and knew every trick in the book.

Dempsey was a bit of a front runner who spent the majority of his energy in the early rounds. While Jack could surely go 15, and come back to win if he needed to ( Brennan fight ), I think Greb could last the first four rounds and make things interesting.

Greb could fight well in the mid 160's to low 170's, so the weight disadvantage here would be about 20-25 pounds.

Greb would have been Dempsey's best challenger outside of Tunney. Considering Tommy Gibbons went 15, and Bill Brennan (Greb's unofficial punching bag) lasted 12, it's not a stretch to say that Greb could have lasted some rounds.

Greb would be the hardest fighter to hit that Dempsey had ever matched, and like GA says, his best challenger overall outside of Tunney (who beat him). No, not a stretch to say he would last at all.

Think he's rather saying that up to Tunney's second fight with Dempsey, his only fight in the past 20 months had been the first fight with Dempsey.

Tunney himself got to enjoy "the life" of a champion after beating Dempsey, while Dempsey was ruggedly determined to re-capture his title. Still didn't quite get the job done.
