Many great fighters have that attitude in my opinion. Either way, the notion that Dempsey could never be manhandled due to attitude or strength is not a sensible one. He may not be beaten by manhandling, but of course it was possible.

Patterson is the most readily comparable HW in terms of styles, yes, I think that's pretty clear.

Of course, Dempsey was a lot more rugged and a rung above generally.

Liston would crush Dempsey... but Marciano, he would make Liston cry. :yep

  5. Let us not forget that Joe Frazier won the biggest fight of all time.
    Frazier
    Holyfield
    Dempsey
    Liston

Frazier did clean house. By 1971 he had established complete and utter dominance at that point more than any of the others. he had beat all worthy contenders. If you wrote a list of the best heavyweights in the world at that time Frazier had beat them all -ali, quarry, ellis, bonavena, chuvalo. Holyfeild always had the shadow of someone -be it Bowe, lewis, moorer or Tyson hanging over him to dispute who was top dog. Even when evander beat Tyson and moorer he had Lewis to rival with. Liston cleaned up but missed out ingo -perhaps a foregone conclusion anyway regarding the patterson result but ali and terrel were coming up about 63' and he had yet to face them. Dempsey always had wills on the back burner but without facing any black dudes already had names like fulton, gunboat smith, levinsky, morris, brennan and miske behind him before getting to willard then much later after losing his mojo still beat a good sharkey who beat an albeit shot wills. I’m starting to think Frazier and Dempsey could be the best two of this four..

Dempsey didn't beat Sharkey. Dempsey should have been DQed.

    Sharkey DQ 7 Dempsey

In your opinion. I think dempsey was getting to sharkey who was losing focus. If it had not been a foul blow (if it was) sharkey was not finding an answer for the inside work and getting frustrated. protect yourself at all times.

C, well said. An OLD Jack Dempsey was as you say"getting" to Sharkey. You can see the heavy handed Dempsey's body blows digging into the stomache of the prime Jack Sharkey. This nonsense about hitting Sharkey in the nuts is wishful thinking on the part of "naysayers",who wish to demean Dempsey at all costs. At worst the blows were just under the top of Sharkey's trunks, nowhere near his family jewels. Sharkey had great skills
at his best, but nowhere's near the tenacity and courage of even this old
and slow Manassa Mauler. Dempsey ,while going to his corner, with his hands at his side, was SMACKED in the face by Sharkey. Dempsey,as was his custom, said nadir as the film shows, and walked calmly to his corner.
Slow, and old he was, but this was a MAN !...Cheers C.

Wow your actually in denial that Sharkey got uppercutted to the balls? I guess sharkey moaning out loud in agonizing pain was because Dempsey hit him in the "lower stomach"...it was just to difficult of a blow to bare

One of the most blatant ball shots of all time, right up there with Golota-Bowe. Sharkey was even on the canvas seen grabbing his nuts because he was in excruciating pain

Dempsey was "getting" to Sharkey. RIGHHTTTT

Dempsey's only shot to beat Sharkey that night was to foul out..and hit him with a sucker punch. which he did. Sharkey was on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Had Dempsey nearly knocked out in the first round too. The referee of that fight should have been investigated.

Yep it's there to see...two blatant uppercuts to the balls..flush right in the nut sack. The Referee should have DQed Dempsey on the spot, or broken up the fighters and gave Sharkey 5 minutes rest.

Wow checkout 5:54 Sharkey clearly grabs his balls in terrible pain after Dempsey clearly lands two powerful blows to the balls...the referee sees this and goes to break them up!!!! Then Dempsey sneaks in a dirty left hook on the break..and instead of the referee disqualifying or taking the round away from Dempsey on that left hook, he counts sharkey out! WOW

At 6:06 of the video you guys can see Sharkeys hand move down and grab his balls while he's on the canvas indicating severe pain from the low blows. I don't think the left hook had much of a impact at all, the low blows really did Sharkey in.

    Terrible job by the referee
