Liston did nothing in career to indicate he was even top 20 heavyweight of all time.

 

I hold Dempsey in higher regard than Liston, but yea, Liston beats that ass.

 

Dempsey could have had about 80 fights by the time he was about 23 years old, that’s just a lot of seasoning for an athlete also in his physical prime. In a later era seasoning and physical prime run in opposite directions.

The best fighters sonny Liston fought did not have that combination of experience, youth, desire and punching power. I have seen enough of the bert whithurst fight to know brave second string 180 pound fighters did hurt prime Liston.

Sonny Liston was a scary, scary man and a great destroyer of world class heavyweights, some of whom may have already been psyched out.

Sonny would be the most dangerous fighter jack ever fought but the same is also true for Liston, dempsey would be the toughest fast man he ever fought.

Sure Liston has a good shot at beating dempseys best opponents but I don’t think patterson, machen or folly would bother dempsey either.

I have to go with dempsey, he wont be intimidated, he would beat sonny to the draw, hit him harder than he had been hit before and have too many answers for him.

 

Dempsey was greater.

Liston's efforts with Clay/Ali should actually throw a great deal of doubt over whether it's right to call him "great" at all.

 

Hm, Dempsey is greater for me. More title defences, comparable resume, similarly dominant, similar longevity. Not by much though, can see arguments for the other side.

Neither is Top15 for me btw. and if borderline.
