'Even Jack Dempsey was impressed: “I don’t care if this kid can’t fight a lick. I’m for him. Things are live again.”' from an article in Time Magazine dated march 22 1963. thought people might find it interesting. if anyones got the whole article, by all means feel free to post it.
Dempsey was one of the earlier proponents of Muhamad Ali, both as a talent and a boxoffice atraction.
Its good to see a past great supporting a modern one, and making positive statements.. All too often its the other way around... I particularly liked his comment which said " things are live again. " Dempsey was no big fan of Sonny Liston, and apparently at one point said that the first man who stood up to him would beat him....
I remember Jack saying something like that then. I had forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. :good
But I also recall Dempsey saying that he would have"loved to have landed on young Clay in mid air " when Dempsey was fighting...And so would I...
Fighters like Cooper, Mildenberger, and Chuvalo managed to land on Ali, so it is a bit siully to say that Dempsey wouldn't.
Oh sure Dempsey couldn't land on Ali, But Henry Cooper, Doug Jones, Ken Norton, Joe Frazier etc could and DID !!! You seem to WANT to forget how fast and dynamic the YOUNg prime Jack Dempsey was ...He was described as being fast as a welterweight in his vicious combinations, and had a killer instinct...But of course you who have never even seen the prime Manassa Mauler even on film ,somehow Know 90 years later, more than the great boxing writers who saw him in his prime and extolled his virtues !!.OH MY...Keep Punching...
