Is this a real thing? or does it just come from an anime because to me it sounds like bobbing and weaving with counter hooks lol but people talk about it like its a super power or something IK dempsey set the groundwork for head movment and bobbing and weaving but still they talk about it being his signature move and the only example is in the willard fight? Dempsey is my fav fighter of all time and i've studied his films so its not like im totally ignorant here can someone help me out?

Tunney was the first real thinking fighter Dempsey had fought.

I heard about it through Hajime no Ippo, but I don't really see many boxing fans using the term during forum discussion, articles, interviews, etc. Same goes for the 'flicker jab' term that the series uses for Hearns' jabbing technique. The series also uses the term 'gazelle punch' for Patterson's leaping hook, but I've heard the shot described as 'kangaroo punch' in boxing journalism. I assumed some of the terms were just made up by the series creator to make the techniques in the ring sound more dramatic, and more of a novelty. (Although Ruddock's 'smash' is real.)

I dunno though, maybe people in the gym really do use 'dempsey roll', etc to describe techniques, and it just doesn't reach forums or the internet. It reminds me of how Mayweather (and Steward) used the 'check hook' term after the Hatton fight, and suddenly all the forum posters were using it, despite not being able to agree on a single definition for the shot.

Watch any Tyson fight until '88 and you'll see the Dempsey Roll employed with bad intentions.

Also check out his manual "Championship Fighting" written in 1950. You can find it online in pdf format. Its still considered one of the best boxing manual's ever written.

    This!

Plus there's a million Tyson training vids where you can see him train to use the bobbing movements.
