A drug may indeed of taken the Edge off of Jack, The Heady Drug of Hollywood and Show business, The Hobo years were a distant memory Jack had been enjoying the fruits of his earlier Lean Years Labours, the Hunger was not there, Old father time had started sending him his calling card, The old Lion had Roared... and the Roaring twenties found other cats to mark their territory, Clara Bow, The Chaleston, Hollywood, Broadway, other theaters of fate and being fated were magnets to enthrall, an old Mauler would be welcomed with open arms....

Dempsey was drugged by Tunney's jab... What was his excuse for the second fight, where he was actually hurt worse more than once than at any time in first.
It is not an uncommon excuse among fighters who have been beaten. On a certain level, they may even believe it themselves. I think that it is one of the less plausible excuses that we see thrown around however.

Maybe i was getting a Broadway and Hollywood Nuance come through... from what i understand for a good few years before Tunny Jack was rubbing shoulders with the Glitterati and clinking glasses, perhaps Jack gave Old father time and Mr Rust a little helping hand ? and after the tough times he'd known who could really blame him...
Yes A 53, today on mainly ESB Jack Dempsey is so vilified by some hateful posters as a fighter and human being that I growing up a few years after Dempsey retired from the ring and hearing of his exploits from boxing people who saw him in the ring, and raved about him, angers me no end... So I try in my little way to defend this great fighter who can no longer defend himself... In the ring he asked for no quarters and gave no quarters, never gave excuses, never insulted his fallen opponents like an Ali, and when he retired from the ring became a much beloved and admired gentleman who was to me my favorite heavyweight, along with Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and the earnest and brave Joe Frazier...What a quartet !!!
Bert, going back quite a few decades, i promised myself if i ever got to New York i'd treat myself to Lunch at Jacks Restaurant , sadly never made it .. I have had to be content with tipping a beer to him and others on occassion.
A53, I several times passed Jack Dempsey's restaurant when he was sitting inside by the front window table drawing swarms of fans who idolized him. I recall looking at his enormous shoulders and jet blue-black hair and high cheekbones that bestowed upon him a picture of power even at his advancing age at the time... Til the day he died Dempsey was always addressed as "CHAMP" by the general public who adored him...
