Good defense. Dempsey seems to keep his head down so much so that he can't really fully see where your shots are coming from, but he keeps his head & chin down and almost instinctual slips shots. The transition between defense & offensive is a little raw and unrefined but the ferocity is clearly there. A little more wild when in attack mode.

Nice footage. He squares up a lot and keeps his feet really wide. I'm just not sold on this kind of offense working in the modern ring. Frankly, I am more impressed with Tate.

At least Tate bested Harry Wills!

I am begining to think that he was the real power in that era!

Both are pulling their punches, although Dempsey let's go of a few

Bill Tate has a similar style to Wladimir but his footwork is superior to Klits

I wonder if that was Tates jab or he was pushing it for sparring. His movement and fluidness is allot better here than against Kid Norfolk where he looked terrible

Ah yes, he jabs a lot and clinches when Dempsey comes in. But as you can see he's on his feet going back forward side to side, stepping in jab stepping out,his footwork is superior.

But then he has too because his opponent is not standing right in front of him not moving and eating the shots

What a terrible response, what I said is true where have I said anything about boxing being simple? Have you seen Chambers Vs Wladimir.

But then it might be hard to dispute what we have just seen in the video Tate vs Dempsey

Dempsey square on with his hands down could easily be hit, especially right there

His hands are down because it would be counter productive to his style..clearly, plus he gets better leverage as he use to say. Square on? He moves way too much soon as Tate comes in he ducks, moves his head..he would be too much for Wladimir. He's too complete of a fighter for him.

It is his style and it makes him easier to hit. It's debatable whether you get better leverage with your hands down. It's easier too, but if you have the skill you can get the same leverage with your hands up

As for him being square on he was allot despite using angles. Other fighters time him with big punches or just back him up with a jab whenever he does that. His ducking with his hands low is also very timeable. See his fights with Tunney, Brennan and even Firpo, they all managed it.

When Johnson called him strictly a hooker, you can kind of get where he was coming from. I wouldn't go that far in regards to Tate, though.

Yeah, it seems to be sparring for the intention of working on tactics/strategy. These days you'd probably use mitt work for that.
