Does anybody have any information about Dempsey's notable sparring partners/sessions aside from Big Bill Tate and Harry Greb. Particularly George Godfrey? I want to know if there is anything on those such as whether or not Dempsey struggled, dominated, when they sparred any information at all. Thanks.
Strangely Dempsey's autobiography only mentions Godfrey once and then only in the context as a potential opponent. For Carl Morris Dempsey used Martin Burke. Willard =Jamaica Kid and Bill Tate, he states in his book that these were his best sparring partners. The Kid cut Dempsey's eye in one spar. Tate's wife ran the kitchen. Gibbons=Godfrey,Burke,Frank Powers,Marty Farrell,and briefly Big Ben Wray 7'2" he lasted half a minute, Dempsey broke his jaw in 2 places. Firpo = Jamaica Kid ,George Godfrey who was paid $1,500 a week,Jack Thompson,Jules Rioux,Jack McAuliffe ,Jack Bernstein lw,Billy Defoe.Dempsey smashed McAuliffe's right eye shut and tore his left ear open,he knocked Rioux, a Canadian heavy unconscious .This was the training camp in which Paul Gallico sparred a round with Dempsey. Carpentier= Jack Renault ripped Dempsey's left eye open with a right hook . Fulton= Jamaica Kid and Jim Johnson Tunney 2=Dave Shade ,Martin Burke,Big Boy Peterson,Whitey Allen, Allentown Joe Gans,Joe Williams. Clever Dave Shade gave Dempsey problems until the ex champ found his timing and gave Shade a black eye. Tunney 1 =Tate,Burke,Jimmy Roberts,Joe Saxon ,Joe Karp.This was the fight for which Tommy Loughran was pressed into service as a sparring partner.He made Dempsey look stupid,Paul Gallico watched their sessions and saw Loughran jab him at will and bloody his nose. Listen it was reported in the times that Godfrey pulled out of a bout reporting broken ribs...Dempsey said himself that Godfrey nor anyone else ever ko ed him sparring...in the sparring reports Dempsey didn't have anymore trouble with Godfrey than other heavys
