I taped 'Dempsey' the movie / biography of the late ex-champion who died in 1983 at age 88.... This made for TV film was released the year that Jack Dempsey died... It's about 3 1/2 hrs long, if you edit out all the bull**** commercials that the History channel spoon fed us upon viewing..... Anyway, I thought Treat Williams and Sam Waterston did a decent job as "Dempsey and Doc Kearns." However, it would be nice if Hollywood did us a favor and brought the story of Jack Dempsey to the silver screen in a large budget production...... But, after all these years, I'd guess Hollywood no longer gives a rats ass about the tale of Dempsey.... Shame..

    Note:

I wrote this piece personally for the "Classic" section of ESB since Jack Dempsey has been hot on this here page as of late........ Cheerio.....

Sally Kellerman played Dempsey's ***** wife--Maxine..... She was a gold-digger of the worst kind....... Not that Jack's later movie star wife--Estelle Taylor was much better... She seemed a ***** as well....... Cheers.....

Any thoughts about this '83 film?

I've not seen it, though I want to. Dempsey has one of the most intriguing life stories of any boxer, along with Johnson, Ketchel and Schmeling (Schmeling is having a movie made about him, Uwe Boll is directing. Uwe ****ing Boll.) I wouldn't like them to try to fit his life story neatly into a two-hour Hollywood movie, though. Too much ground to cover.

The flick is worth a look at.... It covers a lot of ground.... It seems honest to form as well....... Is Treat Williams the best guy to play Dempsey? No, but he gets the point across.... Sam Waterston was great as Doc Kearns..... I do like the movie.........

Yeah.... Williams trained for the role............ He did well--for TV......:rasta

I hated Jon Voight in the '79 remake film of "The Champ." Voight claims he had 14 days to train before filming began...... I can't even watch that ****.......

I thought it was a good made for T.V movie, But I agree Hollywood needs to do this story.
Hell if they can do Cinderella Man , think of the of the story you could get out of Dempseys rough and tumble tale of fistic fury.

Treat Williams as Dempsey (I got the DVD) is far more convincing than John Favereau as Rocky Marciano. Williams KO1 Favereau!

Henry Maske is playing Max Schmeling and Arthur Abraham plays Richard Vogt (guy who defeated Schmeling in his last fight).

YouTube sometime Max Schmeling vs Jose Santa

It was apart of a motion picture that Max Schmeling was the star of. Most have forgotten this film. Shame, for Max Schmeling (before Louis) was considered very popular not only in Europe but in America.

It's a decent enough film, Williams is a husky guy,and the script does not take too many liberties with the facts.
The film should have been made years ago with Jack Palance playing Dempsey :good

Its amazing that Max Schmeling came back after his massacre loss to Louis in 1938 to win the Euro title in 1939 in front of a huge German crowd to basically cap-off his career..... However M.S. returned again after the fall of the Nazi party and WW2 to fight a few fights in his early 40s... He won and lost there...... Still, its all good.....

    Note:

I can picture Henry Maske portraying Mad Max for a film....:thumbsup

Still, the 'Marciano' film with Jon Favreau of 1999 is better than the TV movie that starred a younger Tony LoBianco in the late 70s as "The Rock."
    :yep

    MR.BILL

    Note:

Oddly, LoBianco played 'Frankie Carbo' in the latter film with Favreau in the lead role........
