Does anybody know how if Greb tried to get a fight? did he try very hard to get a fight with him or did he just wait for it to happen and comment on it in newspapers ect?
I don't think it matters whether he resorted to Haye type tactics. He did everything in terms of fighting the top contenders, that he could.
Well thats true but i havnt heard anything like him following Dempsey around like Johnson did to Burns or Langford did to Johnson, so he couldnt have cared that much if he got the fight or not
Johnson followed Burns around the world when Burns went on tour. Dempsey never fought outside of the USA as champion. Where was Harry Greb going to follow him? Short of pitching a tent in his front yard I dont see what Greb could have done to follow Dempsey. By his record it looks like he was too busy fighting to waste his time "following" around a guy who spent most of his reign inactive. He would have followed himself in to the poor house.
da ****? He called out Dempsey at every opportunity between 1918 and his death. Short of actually haunting the ex-champ, what on earth was he supposed to do? Supposedly he was greeting the champion with the words "when are ya going to fight me ya bum?" by the end of 1922 by which time he had utterly thrashed three Dempsey title challengers BEFORE they challenged for the title.
This is common knowledge. Dempsey's response is not fighting Greb. Even if it were not the case, the notion that the man beat 4/6 men to challenge for the title but also should have been a promotional genuis like Johnson and Moore to get the shot is insane.
What i knew was that there was going to be an 8 round fight in Philadelphia 1922 Manager Kearns Says They Will Meet Outdoors in Philadelphia in 8-Round Bout. "Dempsey will probably return home in time to take on Harry Greb in an eight-round, no-decision affair outdoors in Philadelphia. I am reliably told the public really wants the affair to be brought off, and we would like to see Harry make some money, even if he gets mussed up a bit in doing it, to convince him that the best middleweight isn't heavy enough for the big fellow in the game. Im not saying Dempsey could beat him or that Dempsey didnt duck him this is just what i have read in the past
There are loads of little snippets like that where a Greb fight is concerned. More where a Wills fight is concerned.
