Conn is the easiest for him and is KO'd Charles is ahead, but get overwhelmed eventually because his pop isn't deterring Dempsey enough Walcott wins a decision Marciano KO's Dempsey
I would argue that Dempsey never faced anyone as good as those 4 Louis' opponents listed. Conversely, I think that no one on on Dempsey's list would qualify as the best for Louis.
If Conn is listed as one of Louis' best... than Tunney could push him out if I was having to chose between the two. Some might even consider Gibbons over Conn
Conn beat Pastor, Savold and Barlund at heavy. Who Gibbons beat? For that matter, outside of a rusty, old Dempsey in ten rounders, who did Tunney beat?
If Dempsey goes life and death with Firpo, getting knocked down by literally the first punch of the fight and gets spoiled and mauled, winning an ugly decision in the most boring fight ever against Gibbons, these 4 guys have their way with Dempsey. Dempsey was an intense savage, but overrated.
Yeah I gotta go with an above poster I would have Schmeling over Walcott here and Conn at hw. But playing by the rules. Dempsey ko’s Walcott. Walcott’s chin would let him down as it often did against good punchers. Dempsey chases Conn for several rounds certainly longer than the 4 that he took to take out Carpentier. But I just can’t see Conn holding Dempsey off, Dempsey prime has quicker feet than Louis and would just let his hands go more. Louis had hard time letting his hands go on Conn I don’t think Dempsey would. Dempsey KO round 8. Charles outboxes Dempsey. Dempsey vs Marciano brutal fight. Either Dempsey on cuts or rocky by deciscion. 50/50
Can we play Super Mario Brothers next??? Please......... I give Dempsey a slight edge over Walcott, though with no real conviction. Walcott could ut box him to a UD or Dempsey by KO Charles I think has the best chance to beat Dempsey via UD Marciano stops Dempsey late in a brutal slugfest that would make Holyfield salute Conn troubles Dempsey with his movement and boxing ability but Dempsey gets to him and stops him or wins a decision
I think Dempsey takes Joseph Louis Barrow out inside 3 rounds. I think he just overwhelms him before Joe can get going. The brevity of the fight in no way reflects their respective abilities as fighters .If Louis could survive the early onslaught his chances of victory increase dramatically, he is the better boxer, and the more complete fighter, but if Dempsey had him where Buddy Baer,Walcott, and Galento had him he isn't getting off the hook. Mauriello badly shook Louis in what Joe described as his last great fight but Tami had a leg problem and lacked mobility, Dempsey was like a tiger when he had you hurt. That's my take on it.
I'm pretty sure Louis himself would put Schmeling in his top four. So would 90% of the people in the classic forum. I think Dempsey goes 3-1 or 2-2 here. Dempsey's title run was pretty weak. If his best win is over Sharkey, and he fouled to stop him while behind on points, and you look at how tough of a time Brennan gave him, a step is unlikely. Charles has grown on me over the years. He's skills were excellent. He had very good speed and a solid punch. Very tough. PS: As we know Louis has a gifted a win over Walcott in the first fight, and way behind in the second fight until Walcott clowned a bit and got caught.
I'm not interested in who others put in their top 4 ,if anyone disagrees with me about my choices they are at liberty to make their own thread with their own picks. We know nothing of the sort, regarding the 1st Walcott fight no one alive has seen the complete fight, which has been explained to you many, many times . I'm not making a definitive decision about who won a fight that I have only seen highlights of,and anyone that does is a biased fool. PS You're wrong on the 2nd fight scorecards too! Referee: Frank Fullam 5-2 Judge: Jack O'Sullivan 4-5 Judge: Harold Barnes 3-6
Think he goes 2-2. Not beating Marciano beats Conn think he drops one to either Walcott or Charles could potentially beat both of them.
