Forgive me, but I don't recall many picking him by an early stoppage. If others have, I'm sorry for not reading your posts. The next time I see a 1 or 2 round stoppage for Dempsey over Marciano I'll pay more attention.
I see Dempsey having an excellent chance of stopping him early. Dempsey was much faster, started much faster and Rocky was hitable. If Walcott and Moore dropped him early, I can see it ...
I think this is a very good anlysis. I wouldn't be as certain of him beating Foreman and Holyfield as you are, but it could certainly happen. I picked Foreman over him in another thread, but I'm beginning to doubt that assesment. Holyfield could both box and brawl, though, like few others. If he fights smart I would probably like his chances against Dempsey, but if he starts to slug with him... Also, it's hard to pick a winner between him and Frazier. Dempsey wouldn't be able to over-power and manhandle Frazier like Foreman did, so I give Joe a fair chance of surviving the early rounds. But that doesn't mean he automatically wins the round, since Jack was tough, durable and could brawl with the best of them... Hard one to call. Thinking about it; out of Foreman, Holyfield and Frazier I might actually give Dempsey the best odds against Foreman.
you have to? how come? Wills beat far better opposition than dempsey, was a much bigger heavyweight than dempsey, he didnt get knocked out in 1 round by 38 year old journeyman jim flynn, and he didnt have a average fighter like willie meehan beat him and give close calls near his prime. Since u hadvnt seen film of wills, why choose jack over him? wills was far more talented than the other big men dempsey fought. it would be a close call.
going by your logic... if journeyman flynn could flatten dempsey out cold on his back for 20 seconds, and firpo could nearly knock dempsey out, marciano would finish the job.
He is almost guaranteed of dropping Marciano early, but the Rock would rally back to make it a classic ebb-and-flow type of match right until the championship rounds where Rocky would start to dominate. Today I'm liking Rocky's chances so I'll pick him to win a unanimous decision over the Manassa Mauler.
mcgrain i forgout about tyson yes, he is capable and would IMO stop marciano. I dont think lennox lewis would, he never floored a durable world class opponent in his career and he was more content on winning a decision, cause he had a weak jaw and suzy Q could put him to sleep. 50/50 fight I like liston by decision over marciano, both had similiar demeanors. both didnt like to press, both patiently stalked there way in calmly and collectivley, they didnt bull rush in like frazier and foreman. liston liked to sit back and use his jab. both had the strength and durablity to go the distance.
no way jack stops rocky in 1-2. not a cats chance in hell. Marciano isnt some big lumbering unskilled oaf, hes a smaller shorter stronger compact brick wall that wont be penetrated so easily.
I Not a horrible one, dempsey gives jeffries the beating of his life. look how badly 5'8 180lb tom sharkey damaged jeffries in there fights, dempsey was a far upraded version.. 37 year old fitz landed at will on jeff during there first fight. I dont think dempsey will have trouble hitting jeff. jeff liked to lean back with his right gaurd high in a crouch but it was predictable defense with limited blocking ability, and no head movement. jeffries was not acute at utilizing his strength on smaller men, i like dempsey by wide decision or mid round stoppage. do we really know how good jeffs chin is? i dont understand, u say jeff had maybe the best chin in history yet marciano takes the same amount of hard punches as jeff does(except from BIGGER MEN) and dempsey stops rocky in 1-2?
Tyson was a durable world class oppontant who Lewis knocked out. He was a shell of his former self but still a solid world class fighter.
I wouldnt give anybody who has ever breathed much better than a 50/50 chance against Dempsey post Jack Johnson era. He was that dangerous. If you put him in with Louis, Ali, Liston, Marciano, Tyson, he can get beaten but the other guy only has to make one mistake and he is on ***** street.
SuzieQ: I don't get your logic ... I'm not playing a vs b vs c ... I see a fast starting Dempsey having a shot a catching a slow starting Marciano ... I did not say I'd bet it ... it is one of the match ups that might go a different way several times out ... I just not one of the guys that thinks Marciano walks on water ... a hell of a fighter, yes ... a top six or seven all time heavyweight, no ..
No disrespect to Dempsey... But IMO everyone on that list would blast him out. (Too much Tech since then) Johnson would have K.O. Dempsey in his own style.. (Wills, Jefferies & Jackson excluded don't know much about them)
Dempsey from a technical standpoint is the best ofensive heavyweight of all time. The only people who are better technicaly in this respect are smaller fighters like Duran.
