There are several ringside reports, which go into quite a bit of detail. One interesting bit is that Dempsey attacked his brother in his corner when he came to and had to be restrained until his head cleared. Dempsey also mentioned this incident in his 1959 autobiog in which he claims he was down several times until Bernie threw in the towel. Why put out an account which is so obviously false UNLESS HE DIDN'T REMEMBER THE FIGHT because he had indeed been knocked out. Was he acting? Think about it. He supposedly went into the tank in the first twenty seconds and then bothered to put on an act of coming to in a fighting daze in his corner? If it were a dive, why didn't he just hang around a few rounds to make it look good?
I think it was legit, I think Dempsey remarked about it in his book, he may have been hungry and underfed but I don't think Jack would take a dive...he wanted to be Sullivan
Dempsey had one of the greatest chins of all time, did you see the firpo fight?! not to mention the gloves were about 5oz back then pretty much wet tube socks over your fists...
Anybody can get clocked-out,,,,,,, It's no big deal that Jack lost an early fight to a pretty tricky fighter. Nobody would take a 'dive' that quick. Even Sonny Liston went a minute.
