Lets not forget that Greb was beaten by a 21 year old Loughran, when Greb was 29 ,and Greb was 2 lbs the heavier man ,and , was also beaten clearly by Tunney in 1924,when Harry was 30 . Loughran was a light hitter , who said he beat Greb by firing short punches inside ,remind you of anyone?
Let's also not forget that Greb utterly dominated the series with Loughran. If you're seriously using Loughran as a foil for Dempsey then this is surely a series of fights in support of Harry's position?
Dempsey was more than capable of outpointing Greb over 15 rds ,as Tommy Gibbons said of Jack ,"don't let any one tell you Dempsey can't box.". I think he gets to Greb late and stops him ,but he could win over the route.
Tunney had decent power as a heavy, Dempsey was a murderous puncher...I love Greb, he is my # 1 middle and he would make it interesting but taking a punch for a lightheavyweight Tunney and a solid ripped 195lb Jack Dempsey are 2 different things...Jack by a KO somewhere along the way....Dempsey is surely underated on this site...Flawless no...should he have fought Wills YES...but I think that would have been one of his best wins in a highly competive fight...Dempsey/Wills.... for Greb...Jack has too much firepower
Picking Demspey by KO is fine. He would be the best puncher Greb had ever faced. It's also worth keeping in mind that Greb matched maybe the best competition of any fighter in history, and was stopped ONCE within in his first ten fights.
Greb beat a 21 year old Loughran Loughran 163 1/2lbs Greb 167lbs A 22 year old Loughran Loughran 165lbs Greb 168 1/4lbs. ditto Loughran 166lbs Greb 166lbs. Loughran won over 10rds Loughran 166 lbs Greb 168lbs Loughran was 22years old. Greb beat a 22 year old Loughran Loughran 1681/2lb Greb 168lbs. Greb and Loughran drew ,when Loughran was 23 both scaled 168lbs. Point being Greb NEVER beat a prime Loughran. Come to that he never beat a prime Tunney either. Dempsey was working the bag one day ,Greb walked in ,Jack asked him to train him,but Greb wanted too much money ,"besides I want to fight you myself,".Jack replied "who'd pay to see that fight"?
And Loughran beat a one-eyed Greb. The point is, Greb got the better of their series. I have Dempsey saying over and over again that he wants to make the Greb fight and that it is "good business".
Kearns is on the record as not wanting the fight. That would be part of it. Also, there were easier fights out there for Jack and he elected to take them. Then he elected to take semi-retirement.
Yes Jack was making a fortune doing appearances and crap films, the tiger in him was slowly but surely being extinguished .
I am seen as one of the bigger Dempsey apologists on this site but I do not take it for granted that he would beat Greb. I know all the sparring stories and I have looked into it enough to know that there is some basis of truth in them. I also acknowledge the arguments based on common opponents put forward by other posters. If this fight happens then Dempsey is going to get outpointed for as long as Greb is standing. This fight basicaly turns on whether Dempsey can catch up with Greb and KO him. My inclination is that he probably would at some point. If he dosn't then history is verry different.
