Sorry Mr Sarcastic, I was one year out should have read 1924 ,Tunney clearly won ,the 23 fight was a draw . Does this change my ,premise ,HUH??????
SQ: You really don't know about Greb if that is what you think. By every account Greb was lightning fast and used every angle imaginable. He was the exact opposite of your boy Rocky with the straight ahead strategy. Again, take the time to read about their many full force sparring sessions from either Bill's book or website. These were no holds barred sessions and Dempsey could not do **** with him. In addition, Greb went great distances far more often than Dempsey and one of his greatest strengths against larger men was that they could not keep up with him, they would tire chasing him. Let's remember Dempsey got slapped around multiple times v.s. Meechen. A supremely conditioned Greb had a very real shot at decisioning him. This would not be a question if Dempsey ever fought him but Kearns made damn sure it never happened. Instead Dempsey fought half a dozen men Greb beat instead from Meehan to Levinsky to Smith to Brennan to Miske to Gibbons and so on. There were demands for a fight, the newspaper articles still exist. It never happened . If Dempsey fought better men or men that defeated Greb I'd give him some due but he simply clearly ducked the fight.
While I dont dispute your analysis of Greb's style,I find a couple of points worthy of comment. Dempsey and Meehan fought 4 rounders, would Meehan have survived in longer fights? Greb was used to going longer distances than Dempsey because Greb did not have real power ,whereas Dempsey did ,and often scored early kos.
No I have corrected that, I confused it with the later fight.[24] Reports I have read generally say that the 23 fight was a draw, if you have information to the contrary ,I am allways ready to be educated. :good
Greb Tunneys series getting very muddied/blurry here. TWO NYC fights in 1923, rematch then rubber match One encounter in 1924 Cleveland Final encounter St Paul 1925 Please refer to any above with whatever comment
mcvey ... good point. Mine is that Dempsey was known as an explosive fast starting killer yet against Meehan did zero multiple times. Greb had exceptional stamina proven many times against top heavyweights. I am certain his management's concern was that Jack would tire chasing Harry and hitting air long before Harry tired making Jack miss.
I made a chronological mistake ,confusing the 23 fight with the 24 one, when you pointed out that I had done so ,in your own" inimitable" way,I acknowledged and corrected it.I have nothing more to add,My info came from box rec .Maybe Klompton has new info?
Your'e right, I confused myself! The 1st 23 fight was a close win for Tunney, some thought Greb was robbed, 2nd 23 fight, Tunney won convincingly ,both fights at MSG. The 24 fight was the DRAW. 25 was a blow out for Tunney as he beat Greb as convincingly as Greb had beaten him the first time.
Your source is boxrec, your more than confused. Funny reading Genes 2 books I thought he basically admitted Harry won the rematch? You say "close win" ...Hello?
Hello, you sarcastic ****? The first fight in 22, GREB won giving Tunney a bad beating in the last 5 rds. The second fight [23] Tunney won, given as a close fight that some thought Greb won. third fight [23] Tunney won clearly. fourth fight[24] DRAW fifth fight Tunney won clearly ANY PROBLEM NOW? Or would you rather go by a ghosted biography?
FYI: I'm not picking Greb over Jack. I am just justifying there was significant reason to make a bout which at first look to the non-Greb crowd would appear to be a mismatch.
