No, I think a good technician with the right fight plan could get to a prime Jones.

What would be the right fight plan? He loses at distance, he's getting outpunched at infighting. The only thing he could attempt to do is to make Jones not look as effective as usual, but that still results in losing the fight.

Ultimately an astute fighter could have done to a prime Jones what Tarver and Johnson did to a past prime one. It would be a matter of setting up the right trap and making him walk into it. I will further suggest that if Jones had fought more of the best fighters of his era then sombody would have done it.

The stylists who were able to compete with Dempsey for any extended period of time also had some degree of durability. Tommy Gibbons was only dropped and stopped by Tunney. Miske was only floored and stopped by Jack himself. In Bill Brennan's first 100 fights, he was only knocked down and taken out by Dempsey, TWICE. Carpentier looked frail, but nobody took him out faster after he reached full maturity than Dempsey did, and he had not been stopped since Papke took 18 rounds to subdue him on cuts, nine years earlier. The only other time Carp was ever counted out was when he was a flyweight/bantamweight, barely 15 years old. In 250 bouts, nobody had knocked out Bat Levinski before. Does Roy truly match their toughness and guts?

Meehan was stopped by punches five times in 159 recorded bouts. All five stoppages came AFTER his series with Dempsey. He already had about 110 fights of survivor oriented experience when they first commenced fire. Nobody had ever come closer to punching Willie into a knockout defeat than Jack did in their second and fifth bouts. The sailor would shortly follow up his series with Dempsey by outscoring Langford as well. Between bouts with Dempsey, he also took the measure of Dillon over six. Wills failed to stop him within the four round limit. He drew with Miske over four during this period. Fulton failed twice to stop him inside of four. It wasn't until June 1921 that Tommy Gibbons finally broke through and sent Fat Willie's career into full tailspin. After that, Fulton did stop him, but needed five rounds to do it, while Miske needed just one, like fellow Dempsey victim Gibbons. Given a four round limit, betting the rent on RJJ over Jack wouldn't be wildly irrational.

In a 12 round or championship distance match, Roy is going to get hit at some point by the Dempsey of Toledo, either to the head or body. Around 30 seconds before the end at Toledo, Jack hopped Willard skyward with a short hook to the ribs, a far more legitimate lifting off the feet than the delayed reaction final knockdown Foreman scored on Frazier in Jamaica. How does Roy's originally sub 160 body respond to that? As fast as Dempsey was in Toledo, is it reasonable to expect that Jones doesn't get clocked on the chin even once? Because based on how he was stopped three times, that may be what it takes for him to survive to the final bell.

The thing is setting a trap isnt really possible when you get your head used as a speed ball, you keep missing your punches and get smashed with a massive counter punch whenever you throw and you get knocked out trying.

Tunney is the only 20s fighter on film that looks like he maybe remotely competitive in the modern era

The thing is boxers know how good Jones was even if the fans are too stupid to see it, Nigel Benn said after he retired he didnt think he'd win he just wanted the massive payday

If he really wanted to be compared to Greb then he could have gone after the best available contenders from middleweight to heavyweight. A win over Lennox Lewis for example might have gone some way towards swinging the argument in his favour.[/QUOTE]

lennox did not want to fight roy after he defeated ruiz. in lennox's defense, it's a no win situation for him but it's hard to beat someone when they won't get in the ring with you. holyfield didn't want to fight jones either in '97. jones pursued that fight but was shot down. same thing with tyson in '04. mike couldn't get his act together and jones fought the tarver rematch instead.

Why do people act like jones was so skilled. Skilled fighters dont get caught like Jones does. Skilled fighters typically are able to fight longer due to their fundamentals. Im one of Dempsey's bigger detractors but he would be poison for Jones. He is very strong, very aggressive, in excellent shape, very durable, and hits extremely hard. Sounds like a recipe for disaster for Jones. Dempsey by KO in under 6 rounds. Do you really think Dempsey is going to be worried or confused by Jones shoe shine style and points stealing? He would simply soldier on, looking to hit anywhere and everywhere until he brought Jones guard down and then would knock Jones head into the 18th row for Dz Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince to recover.

Fact: Roy Jones threads bring out the worst in everyone.
