Do you think prime Garcia would have repeated the trick 3-5 years later? Is that something you would actually expect to happen.

I'd give him a shot because any puncher had a chance with Norton. Norton was favourite to win both fights.
I don't say Norton did not improve, but at the same time he was improving Garcia was deteriorating.
Garcia has the ko win over Norton who else who was any good when he beat them is on his list of victims?

That's exactly the point though. What makes you think Garcia is such a big puncher?

I don't think he was a big puncher just a puncher, which actually doesn't auger well for Norton against Dempsey who undoubtedly was.

It would be silly not to give the best version of Garcia a chance against prime Norton.
The reason is all too obvious.

The improvement in Norton post Garcia wasn't just physical, it was mental. Who would have believed a hypnotist and motivational book could have so much impact? He lost just two fights in the next 6 years and won 13 in a row (mostly easy op) post Garcia including Ali.

Exactly my point. He faced many people who could hit just as hard as Garcia who was a never was and they didn't all blow him away because he clearly became a better fighter.

A fighter good enough where I don't think it wise to give up 20 pounds in muscle to.

Norton was kept away from hitters after being ko'd. When he faced them they ko'd him.
Dempsey never seemed to have a problem conceding weight.

He fought plenty of men who could punch just as hard as Garcia could and none of them blew him away.

Dempsey never fought a HW as dangerous as Norton.

A point that is always overlooked with the Garcia loss is that Garcia didn't blow him away. It's a totally different loss than the ones against Foreman, Shavers and Co0ney.

The fight with Garcia went 8 rounds. Foreman blew him out in 2, ****ey and Shavers in 1 yet the Garcia loss always seems to get categorized with the others. The Foreman, C00ney and Shavers fights combined accounted for about 8 minutes total. The Garcia bout basically lasted 3 times longer than the other three ko's combined.

I may see if its still in print and read a copy. Not that I'm thinking of turning to boxing at my age, but hell who knows what it might motivate me to do.

Which HW did Dempsey face that you feel would have broke the jaw of Ali?
