I do favour Dempsey, but I think he should bulk.

Maybe Spinks would have outboxed him weighing 175 but he added muscle. Maybe Holy would have beat Douglas weighing 190 but he added muscle.

Maybe Dempsey beats Norton at 190, I just feel added muscle will help him out against an opponent as good as Norton who will outweigh him by 20 pound.

Always a good debate with you my friend :good

To be fair, Sharkey is hard to rank.

His depth of opposition is just sick, but he also has a few inexcusable losses.

He is basically a fighter who was on the cusp of greatness!

He did seem to give everyone a tough night though. Very hard to rank.

Firstly, I don't think the best version of Quarry gets to the Norton who fought Foreman. Norton will always out-athlete him.

Secondly, 2 of the punchers that Norton met who took him out did so at the very tail end of his career, the last fight and the fourth to last fight. Not a great measure of chin or durability. Furthermore, the guy who did take out a prime Norton is among the first to be mentioned when discussing hardest punching heavyweights ever.

When were Ken Norton's peak years? 1972 to 1978? Yes, Norton was stopped only once, by George Foreman, during that time. But Norton faced only two hard punchers among the top heavyweights at most from 1972 to 1978, Foreman and possibly Jerry Quarry. Norton did stop Quarry, but the latter was past his peak at the time.

Somehow, Norton never fought the likes of Joe Frazier, Ron Lyle or Earnie Shavers during the period from 1972 to 1978 in addition to facing Foreman and Quarry only one time each during his career. Did Norton's brain trust feel that their charge simply could not cope with the hard-punching top heavyweights and steered him away from them? It sure looked that way.

Perhaps Norton's braintrust thought that beating Ali was good enough to prove his worth.

Kenny Norton was a good puncher as well. So Dempsey can coming tearing into him at his own risk. Dempsey certainly hit hard enough to KO almost anyone but I like Norton in this matchup

Norton is bigger, stronger, the better boxer with a better defense. I don`t think Dempsey ever faced a big guy who was as skilled a boxer as Kenny. Mostly it comes down to the fact that I don't trust the level of opposition that Jack Dempsey faced as much as Norton`s.

    Norton by KO.

The problem w that is Norton's management didnt let him face a puncher .. name one puncher he defeated .. I say Dempsey was toofast, fast starting and would take Ken out early ..

Not entirely true... Kirkman was a puncher, Quarry had a good punch, Garcia had stopped him already, Lovell had a punch, Bobick could do almost nothing but punch. He was lined up against Foreman fer Crist sake.

Did Norton face a worse set of punchers than, say, Bowe?

Don't just repeat stuff because other people say it. Other people are f*cking morons.

Which TOP punchers did Norton beat or even survive against? Quarry was washed up. Bobick, Kirkman ,Garcia, and Lovell feasted on bottom feeders and were never top punchers anyway. The only name of any relevance on their combined stoppage list is NORTON.:think

Bowe has no relevance to this discussion, you don't boost some one's chin by saying their opposition hit harder than Joe Bloggs' did .Well only if you're a f*cking moron.
