He fought and mostly beat everybody he could fight. Floyd gets a bit of stick for his defence s if I recall.
One of my favorite fantasy fights. I would pick Patterson to beat Dempsey everyday of the week and twice on Sunday, if not for Dempsey's power and Patterson's chin. Patterson could outbox and even knock Dempsey down, but Dempsey eventually gets to Patterson and stops him.
Is Floyd "a fairly modern heavy" though? The division he controlled was a continuation of the lightheavyweight-filled one that Marciano presided over. Floyd himself -- the apex of the pyramid -- took six rounds to take out Pete Rademacher. An amateur with zero pro fights, who doesn't exactly look like a modern athlete on film. Floyd got knocked down in the process. It sounds a lot like Dempsey's sort of division. Floyd looks like progress from Dempsey's era, but neither of these guys look like the leap forward we see by the 70s.
I know you may be joking, but it's too tempting not to ask: How can you tell who has fast-twitch muscles on Charlie Chaplin film?
You note I said in my post that I thought late career Patterson could be competitive against Dempsey. I’ve said here many times, IMO Patterson became a better fighter after he lost the championship.
Assuming, before this Fantasy Fight, Jack Dempsey gets to see films of Patterson in his prime and Floyd Patterson sees Dempsey in action and in his prime, I would not be surprised to see a Dempsey win by stoppage in the first or second round.
And I think Dempsey does better vs Rademacher and Roy Harris, meaning Dempsey doesn't get dropped by them and likely stops them sooner.
Floyd Patterson's historical cross that he has to bear, aside from Cus protecting him, is that he became heavyweight champion before he REALLY learned out to fight. Circa 1966-69 Patterson would have dispatched Rademacher and Harris with a lot less difficulty.
I love Floyd Patterson but this looks like a very bad match for him. Dempsey was fast, powerful and ferocious.
