Hey Crotcherty. The thread is a what if, not another venue for you to check in and spew your venom. Take your meds.

It depends if Jack fights controlled or goes kamikaze like he did vs Firpo. Lyle was taller by 2” and a good 25 pounds or so of muscle but Dempsey matched him on reach. Lyle could freeze up. I was always surprised at the way he froze against Ali. He was actually stung a few times by Young too.

Dempsey had the skills to do it but it’s a pickem to me as Jack never reached his best due to inactivity and became a guy that saw red when nailed and that could be his downfall.

Firpo a terrific puncher? Firpo was a 6'2 216 guy.... And Firpo was not even in a top 50 hardest hitters .lyle was bigger, stronger, tougher and did hit harder

Well obviously it favors the more "robust" guy .. so before we weigh in let's hear who Klompton determines that is when he's done changing his pad ..

21 of Firpo's 26 stoppages were against fighters with losing records or who were debuting. That leaves a real small sample size upon which to assay this supposedly awesome power. The remaining KO victories include Al Reich in his final fight and 7th KO loss out of 38 fights, a 180 pound Charley Weinert who was KO'd in about 17% of his contests, a 43 year old Willard in his final fight, a 4-2 William Daly and a 8-7 Black Gunboat Smith. Not exactly Tyson-esque.

You have to consider eras as a previous poster said. An early 20's Dempsey vs. an early 20's Lyle? A mid-70's Dempsey vs. a mid-70's Lyle.
I'll take the "Mauler' in any scenario.

SO what is your point , that Firpo had no punch and Dempsey had a weak chin ?

FYI, Firpo's record at heavyweight dwarfs that of Sullivan's when comparing level of opposition under M of Q ... :stirrpot

Lyle wasn't born in the early 1920's and by the mid 1970's Dempsey was about 80 years old and the victim of a stroke. I think we ought to give Lyle a little more credit than to think he'd beat up on an 80 year old stroke victim or to think he was so bad that he'd have lost to an 80 year old stroke victim.

    I was talking about a 20's prime Lyle vs. a 20's prime Dempsey and...a 70's prime Lyle vs. a 70's prime Dempsey. IMO...Lyle goes bye-bye!

Could go either way. Whoever lands the first hard clean punch. If fought in 20's
definitely favor Dempsey. As when a fighter went down no standing 8 count , no
knockdown rule and no go to neutral corner. Thats why Willard received such a
savage beating . Dempsey virtually teed off at will.
