Dempsey VS Sharkey appreciation thread

A fair reflection of what happened in those fights, would have been a TD win for Sharkey in the first, and a UD win for Schmeling in the second, hence they would effectively swap title reigns.

It's a fight not a tennis match.

 

Good performance by both men. Sharkey is very fresh while Dempsey clearly lost a step. Hes slower of hand and foot than in his prime and stands straiter. Not physically able to fight out of his famous low crouch anymore.
That being said Sharkey the better boxer and Dempsey the better puncher. I think Dempsey was on his way to cracking Sharkey mentally here. It's a fight and Dempsey stopped him. Sharkey should have known better than trying to complain rite in the middle of close quarter combat!!!

 

It wasn't in the balls. Sharkey was notorious for wearing his trunks high you can even see it in the footage.

 

So if a fighter blatantly gets hit hard in the balls he’s not allowed to wince in pain and complain to referee? Speaking of the referee, isnt it his job to immediately break up the fighters when one gets smashed in the nuts?

And Sharkey face which showed excruciating pain from getting smashed low tells it all

If Sharkey's balls were that high up then he'd be singing soprano. The 2 preceding punches were at the belly button region in the same spot and the third looks to be no different however the angle is bad. Clearly not in the balls though.

Sharkey's face showed complaint. Not "excruciating pain".

 

This film isn't the best, there are better versions which show the ending in clarity. I applaud posting what actually happened and commenting on it as opposed to what so and so said.

Dempsey was being outboxed ( 4 to 1 in rounds ) . Who else has it differently? He was also rocked at one point by Sharkey combination. Dempsey went low to stun Sharkey then hit him with a left hook while he was talking to the referee.

Those cups were metal back then. The often did as much harm as good.

 

Not surprised by this post. Whenever someone strongly disagrees with you, you immediately get personal and cry hater...it was like in the Frazier vs punchers gauntlet thread, people were picking Frazier to lose to big punchers and you became so offended you made a “Marciano vs punchers gauntlet thread” in order to deflect the criticism away from Frazier on to Marciano....everybody knew it and you pretty much admitted it. Same thing here, someone doesn’t agree with you about jack Dempsey you immediately bring Marciano in to deflect the criticism away from Dempsey. It’s your go to.

Oh and speaking of Marciano, read my posts about him. I am critical of his chances against big modern heavyweights, critical that he took on cockell instead of Valdes, and admit some of his best opponents like Charles were clearly past their prime .....you see I am able to objectively look at my favorite fighters in the mirror and see their flaws...are you???

What I said is fact. Dempsey and Sharkey were engaged in close quarter combat and instead of giving what he got the mentally weak Sharkey complained instead of fighting and got knocked out for his troubles. That's all there is to it. Unfortunately your hatred for Dempsey cant erase what happened. Sharkey got knocked out by the better fighter. That's it.

Never said he wasn’t. All I said is Sharkey was ahead 5 rounds to 1, staggered Dempsey badly in rounds 1 3 and 6 and was on his way to a unanimous decision before Dempsey Hit him in the ball in round 7. In my opinion without the shot to the nuts, Dempsey does not win the fight
