So let me get this straight , is this the tenth or eleventh book ? Amazing thing considering you do it all for your love of the sport and fortunately make plenty of dough from your day job ... looking forward to Dempsey 3 ..

Actually the appellate judges ruling in 1932 did NOT order Dempsey to pay anything. He did determine two things:

1). That the case had to be retried.
2). What costs incurred by the plaintiff could and could not be reimbursed IF the case was retried and if the plaintiff won.

That’s it. I have found no evidence that there was a retrial.

What’s wrong with Mr Pollacks books exactly? I don’t know a lot about the reading side, just curious on your thoughts - you’ve spent a lot more time researching boxing history than I ever will, nice guy though I don’t think it’s a good look to be rude to Adam for no reason I can discern.

Pollack's books are the benchmark in boxing biographies.
I have both vols of Jack Johnson ,Jeffries, and Fitzsimmons and the first 2 vols of Dempsey, all are excellent! Never known Adam Pollack to knock another author, and never known Klompton to praise one.

Adam is very even handed. Instead of only presenting one side of history, which is always multifaceted, he presents the facts as he knows them.

Adam Pollacks books are very good. I've several of them and enjoyed them all.

Klompton, on the other hand, is a complete dick. Cannot discuss topics without insulting, sarcastic remarks. It's unfortunate because the
real guy, Stephen Compton, wrote Live Fast, Die Young. The Life and Times of Harry Greb which is the best researched book on any topic
that I've read. He must have taken years to compile probably every possible bit of information on Greb; very impressive book and well worth obtaining despite the fact the money will go to a complete jerk. And he has a huge bug up his ass about Dempsey. I would not buy any book he wrote about Dempsey as he is totally biased about the man. Pollack wrote two Dempsey books and I recommend both of them.

Unfortunately any book discussing history that only presents one angle of that history is worthless and deceptive.

It's boxing. Boxing. We're not comparing Marxism vs Capitalism, or whether or not Chinggis Khan ravaged 3,000 women. It shouldn't be too hard.

Like anything else the deeper you go the more you find.

As an example of deception in this thread where Crapton outright lies that the appellate judge issued Dempsey $100,000 in damages.

What occurred specifically was during the TRIAL in 1931 Dempsey in a fit of anger yelled he would fight Wills right now. The judge stated “Are you serious? If so and if the plaintiff agrees this would satisfy the contract”. The plaintiff agreed and the judge asked the jury to come back with a decision in Dempseys favor. Trial was over either that day or the next. So Dempsey did not lose the breach of contract trial in 1931.

Fast forward to 1932 the plaintiff issued an appeal and the appellate judge issued his decision that the case be sent back for retrial. Within that decision the appellate judge categorized what the plaintiff could and could not recover if they won the retrial but absolutely did not prescribe that Dempsey pay anything.

So none of this Crapton ever mentions and instead of taking interest and wanting to investigate he instead lies.

    Unanswered questions?

What ever happened to that 1931 Dempsey vs Wills fight? I can’t find any mention of it post trial.

Dempsey mentions that the “Fitzsimmon's deal cost him $100,000”. Was that the cost for lawyers to defend himself? Was it an out of court settlement to prevent a costly retrial? Combination of both? Something else?

So more work needs to be done. I think the answers may lie within the Chicago Tribune newspapers archive. I may subscribe this week to see if I can find answers.

I've only been a member of this forum for a couple of months, but I learned everything I need to know about c/klompton from this thread here, in which he told William Walker (who has 1 of the best channels on YT for old fights) that he doesn't understand boxing well enough to be following it. I'm glad I didn't give him even a plug nickel for his book.

The contract dispute is covered thoroughly in my 3rd Dempsey book, which is now available. Hope you all enjoy.
