Listen, the book is great. I understand not wanting to give him any money but it's worth it.

I don’t believe it’s great at all! He purposefully leaves out the other side of the argument which is substantial.

Yes. That’s an extremely one sided bio of Greb that tells only one side of a tale. Greb is great, Dempsey, bad. Dempsey, one of boxings hardest punchers ever and one of its greatest fighters was afraid to fight a middleweight? No chance whatsoever.

No mention of “The Greb Problem”.

No mention Dempsey and Greb wore pillow sparring gloves when they sparred in training camp.

No mention of the newspaper poll after Greb had been fighting four years at heavyweight on the eve of Grebs last meaningful fight at heavyweight (Gibbons) which asked who should Dempsey fight next where Greb received no votes?
(after he beat Gibbons he ended up third on that poll but way behind the top two).

A history of anything has to cover the full story. Not be a fanboy experience.

You have your nerve. You're an obvious hater of Dempsey, as noted in your Greb book and posts across multiple forums. Pollack wrote two thoroughly researched books on Dempsey which are the best and most comprehensive bios of Dempsey to date. I've read them all and Pollack gave a very unbiased and thorough account of Dempsey's career and personal life. I sense a bit of jealousy in your hostile posts.

Wait, so Klompton and Adam reach different conclusions on the whole Dempsey-Greb thing? Where do they differ? How much space does Adam devote to Greb?

For anyone who wants to do their unbiased research they can find that Dempsey did in fact agree to a fight with Wills on three separate occasions. The first two were scrapped because advance money promised to Dempsey came in the form of a bad check that the bank said was no good. A mere $25k that Dempsey settled on and yet it wasn't covered. At that point Dempsey knew he would never get paid his purse. Other attempts at making the fight were blocked by athletic commissions and politicians in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey when the Red Sox owner offered to put up the money. No one else would put up the money. The offer in Canada proved to be a sham, and Wills seemed more content to sue Dempsey for breaches of contract than to actually fight him.

Wills was offered a job as sparring partner for Dempsey and turned it down. Yet fought other opponents for less money than Dempsey had offered. Wills declined a fight with Tunney for a shot at the title and $250K, a career high pay day, only to get beaten by Sharkey. Looking back on Wills career, there aren't very many wins from '22 - '25 that suggest he even deserved a title shot. During that time Wills was still the World Colored Champion and ducked George Godfrey, refusing to give him a shot. Godfrey was a sparring partner of Dempsey.

The revelation which I never saw prior was the manner in which the jury trial ended in 1931. I found 4-5 different newspapers with articles via both AP and UP so there has to be a good level of credibility here.

The trial ended when Dempsey yelled out he would fight Wills NOW. The judge asked Dempsey if he was serious and the Coliseum Club accepted. The judge ended the trial in Dempseys favor.

Issue now is I can find nothing regarding this proposed fight. I believe the answer may lie within the Chicago Tribune archives.

His book about Harry Greb is the gold standard.

I cannot in all conscience say that it is is not.

The problem was that he lacked the capacity to disagree with somebody, and still be civil to them.

For all that he was an eminently productive poster.
