Dempsey would destroy Foreman

  1. Sonny's jab

    Sonny's jab Guest

Foreman had some rough little touches, he'd sometimes side step an opponent and spin him off balance, push him to the floor or tap him with a heavy prodding jab. He'd do a lot of pushing and spinning.
For a while he very occasionally looked liked he had the embryonic foundations to becoming a reasonably clever brutal boxer-puncher.

But after he beat Frazier he REGRESSED if anything.
Against Ali he straight out sucked.
Against Lyle he cant win by any other means that dragging Lyle into a street brawl. Against Young he sucked.
I admired his brute strength but he looks full of flaws.
But in 1970 against Chuvalo he looked less raw than ever. That was just 14 months after turning pro but he looks more polished there than he did 3,5,8 or 20 years later !

Posts that could be taken as personal attacks on certain fighters are not helpfull here. They just cause conflict.

Lets just keep it on th boxing.

Yes, but how proven is Dempsey's chin? He only took punches from a 210+lbs puncher once in his entire career. And that guy knocked him down twice, once out of the ring. Watch Firpo-Dempsey, you wouldn't believe it but Firpo makes Foreman look like Mayweather; he boxes exactly like someone who comes in the gym for the first time and swings thinking he's Mike Tyson.

And outside of that he has been dropped and stunned by lightheavyweights, even knocked down 9 times by a sub-journeyman middleweight, though to be fair he had only 20 or so fights. He was also knocked out in less than a minute by Flynn who had the record of 40-30-20 or something.

What do you mean? He can easily land that.

Well i didn't suggest a dreadnoughtweight division, i was talking about a cruiserweight division which has been around for nearly thirty years, and rightfully so. Hell, even now people are saying that Povetkin, Byrd et al are too small. Without realising that they are as big as or bigger than Sonny Liston. And that wasn't a skinny 185lbs guy.

Foreman would be too big and too strong. Dempsey would have his moments but Foreman could take most of what Dempsey could throw at him, and it took a lot for Dempsey to knock out big guys. Foreman could catch him with that uppercut coming in and and decapitate him.

I agree that Foreman would decapitate Dempsey.

Frazier would be the one to eviscerate him.

Yeah, but a hypothetical match-up assumes the fighter as they look at their best (otherwise, I could make the case for the Dempsey who was pummelled by Tunney being decapitated by Foreman), Also consider that styles make fights. Foreman was the pure agressor in the fights that he lost. Given the fact that Dempsey's ability to counter-punch wasn't that great, in and of itself, and that he seemed pretty useless when going backward and against the ropes, I'm thinking he'll be moving forward, and that would work to his detriment...in my opinion.

I don't think any pressure fighter would beat a prime George Foreman. As good as Dempsey's head movement may have been, I see Foreman catching him coming in and finishing him within 3 or 4 rounds.

He didn't "whoop that ass", he got knocked out... Foreman would destroy Dempsey, he'd push him back and hammer him with those uppercuts and hooks.

    Foreman KO 2

Dempsey loved fighting large opponents and tended to have more trouble with small foes. Foreman's chin could pose as another obstacle for him, this fight could very well be a toss-up but I wouldn't be surprised if Dempsey stopped Foreman.

Amen. Dempsey is the one here with a "puncher's chance", cause the odds are definately in Foreman's favor.

Whoever said Frazier had a glass jaw anyway? The man was only stopped three times in his entire career, and two of them were by, well, Foreman. He went 43 rounds with Ali before he got TKO'd, and it wasn't even a a knockout TKO - it was an RTD. Frazier had a good chin.

Foreman's chin is iron. The Ali stoppage was from exhaustion (not a bad chin), and he won the Lyle fight. Other than those two fights, he's had no issues at all with his chin.

This is a tough pick. In the end, I don't think Dempsey had quite the indomitably effective offense/defense combination going all the time that his hardcore supporters sometimes make out. He was pretty frequently caught with right hands, even by a rather wild, clubbing hitter like Firpo. Foreman was approximately the same size as Firpo with a similar style and was a considerably better fighter. I tend to see Foreman taking Dempsey out within five rounds in a short, wild fight.

I like foreman by early Kayo in this one. Dempsey doesnt fare any better in this fight than marciano or frazier would. Dempsey's biggest weakness was fighting on the defensive(which he did not do well) which he would have to do in order to suceed vs foreman. I believe foremans speed is underated. Watch his filmed fights pre 1974, he moves alot better than people think. Also I dont think anyone in history could stand in front of him and slug it out. they would have to have a powerful jab, size, better punching abilities, and patience(liston, louis) the only time dempsey fought even something remotley like foreman was a very unskilled fat southern marshmellow luis firpo who wasnt 1/10 the fighter foreman was and he still nearly knocked dempsey out and floored jack twice.

I agree with this. Dempsey was repeatedly pasted by Firpo.. nothing more than your average tomato can in any era. Of course he still won, with outside help, but what does this tell you about Jack's overall ability? It pretty much tells us he is still overrated by many.
