Dempsey would take out Jeffries over any distance; best early HW h2h?

Which is exactly what i'd gathered on him reading about him early on in my boxing fandom...But I just don't see it panning out in the current film available. I can see where his reputation as a defensive master comes from, he is a very adept glove/elbow/shoulder blocker, and he can certainly keep his distance and feint, but i just don't think of him as a back foot mover. I suppose if you could point out some sections of film highlighting that.

I think he showed some great spurts of mobility against say, Moran maybe. I haven't watched Jack in a while.

 

Dempsey would destroy Jeffries in under 3 rounds. Jeffries would take a horrible beating. Jeffries never saw fast deadly combination punching like what Dempsey would bring. Dempsey at 185lb was also heavier, stronger than the supermiddleweights who gave jeffries so many problems.

 

Lol, you do know Dempsey himself said he would lose. Dempsey at 185 was 2 pounds more than Sharkey was, and even lighter than Corbett, Jackson, Ruhlin and Munroe. Your weight argument won't hold water here.

As for power shots Fitz hit just as hard if not harder than Dempsey, and he unloaded perhaps with tampered gloves on Jeffries and could not stun or floor him.

A. Dempsey had much better modern punching techqnique than Fitz. Dempsey actually knew how to punch with leverage, and in combinations, while fitz was a standup bareknuckle style lean back fighter that would have gotten killed fighting like that in later eras.

B. Dempsey's left hook was a harder punch than anything Fitz had.

C. No 165lb could match Dempsey's punching prowess.

I am talking about 165lbers Fitzsimmons and Choynski giving Jeffries so many problems. Also Sharkey was a midget 5'8, while Dempsey stood 6'1. Dempsey was far more skilled, far faster, much better movement, footwork, and a far greater puncher than Sharkey.


Jeffries never fought a man who had a blend of speed, power, footwork of a young jack dempsey. He never fought a man who knew how to throw lethal combinations. He never fought a 185lber puncher as ferocious as Jack Dempsey.


Dempsey would tee of on Jeffries right from the beginning and never let him off the hook. Jeffries was a great athlete, but didn't have great boxing skills necessary to stop Dempsey, and didn't possess lethal power.

And you basing this on which films? How come Fitz often finished a man with one punch, while it took Dempsey far more in many of his fights?

The fact the Jeffries could take direct hits from Choynski and Fitz, plus Sharkey and everyone else proves he had an A+ chin. Dempsey was floored by lesser men, and really had his hands full with the likes of Brennan. In addition Dempsey's title run does not quite measure up.

In closing if you pick Dempsey, that is fine, just don't use weight, quality of opposiiton beaten or power punchers Jeffries defeated as your as to your main reasons why.
