He doesn't compare, in a head to head sense, to Tua, Lewis, Butler.

I'd say he's on par with Herbie Hide or Corrie Sanders, which is nothing to sneeze at. Tua, Lewis, Morrison and Tyson are ahead of him, in my opinion.

Dang the 90s were a weak era if those were the only fighters around.

British boxing writer Reg Gutteridge once said that Dempsey,"In his prime...was the most dangerous, unarmed man in the world!!" The same cannot be said for Tua...Lewis.. Butler...or Tommy Morrison. I'm taking Dempsey...

    Agree 100%
People just dont take the time to research what a bad ass Dempsey was in and out of the ring. Stone cold killer. When not fighting he was the nices guy a person could be. Once the switch was flipped watch out!!
Schmeling who lived to be 99 said Dempsey was in a class by himself. Head and shoulders above everyone else.
Ill take Schmelings opinion over us guys who sit on a keyboard.

P4P Dempsey hit with the best of them.

Problem is that some other top fighters had a lot more pounds.

Jack used to sit at a table near the window at his place...and people used to come in all the time....just to be able to see Dempsey. He'd pose for pictures...sign autographs...he'd talk to everybody who came in to the restaurant.
I was with my dad...the place was on Broadway...I'd been a boxing fan since 1963....Marciano...Louis...Dempsey
...loved all the greats. I was 20 at the time....I waited my turn...he looked at me and said,"Hello son!".
I put out my hand...and he shook it. His hands were like ****ing hams....Big!!! I told him that it was an honor to meet him...and I thought he was one of the greats....he said,"Thank you very much!" I was stunned!! It wasn't much...but I shook hands...and talked to Jack Dempsey. I remember seeing murals and lots of pictures of fighters on the walls. The place closed in the Fall of 1974...it was THE meeting place in NYC for the longest time.

Way below average, as anyone with a brain and a bit of common sense would deduce.

Sh!t man, the fact that anyone considers a crude little 180lber to be a superior puncher to a crop of fighters that includes the likes of Tyson, Tua, Morrison, Lewis, Sanders, Foreman, Bruno, Ruddock, Briggs, Rahman, Mason, Mercer, Butler, and Cooper just makes my head spin. If anymore proof is needed that old school boxing fans haven't got the slightest grasp on reality then this thread proves it.

    Dempsey was a great puncher.
That fact doesn't change whatever era you put him in.
As for body weight, Dempsey was a bit light for his own era anyway. Loads of fighters were 10, 20, 40 pounds and more heavier than him in his own era yet that didn't impact on his reputation as a big puncher.

This is the best you have? Some limey who never saw Dempsey fight and was a geriatric when the 90's came along bloviates and we're all supposed to bow before his golden words of wisdom?

    F*ck that nonsense.
