#OnThisDay in 1939 it emerged that former heavyweight king Jack Dempsey had alerted cops after getting a letter containing a threat to bomb his New York City restaurant. The writer, according to the New York Daily News, said that they "didn't like Dempsey, the prices and the place" and they were going to blow it up. Bomb threats and stink bombs were a major part of the mafia's intimidation methods, to get business's to join corrupted restaurant unions in the 1930s. Not sure if they would try that on such a high profile place, but it is food for thought.
