I always noticed when people talk of Dempsey in terms of Head to Head they always talk about if he doesn't get the person out in the early rounds he is done in the later ones. The only reason I don't understand this is because there are times where he Dempsey had late round kos and even got a late round ko on Jack Sharkey while past his peak. So the question is do you think the whole Dempsey loses after the early rounds is legit or just a constant myth spread around long after Dempsey was out of the ring?

Like way inside the distance and then Ryan was a welterweight and nocked his ass out early so that and that fatty arbuckle guy won that four rounder on him and Flynn kayos him in the first? I don't know man. He don't seem that durnable or staminated.

well some don't count the Flynn fight as much I guess it is due to the fact that he is said to have come in some fights not in the best of shape due to him being a hungry fighter. Excuse maybe but wouldn't put it pass it also taking in consideration he also stopped Flynn after that and really didn't suffer a ko like that again. I can't speak what can be valid or not but there have also been times where he stopped someone in the 11th and 12th and he went 15 rounds with Gibbons. Maybe more can bring incite to the table on this one would also like to hear Burt among others take on this matter. Well looking forward to more post

Well I've seen a share of poster make that claim especially in terms of head to head with the likes of Marciano. Every time they always say his chances of winning become slim when he is heads into the later rounds (this is normally from the less knowledgeable Dempsey critics) but it's been shown that he has gone the distance a good number of times going 15 with Gibbons and had some late round kos.

hya ali, contrary to some posters, Dempsey had excellent stamina when it was REQUIRED...He was not an all or nothing prelim fighter that shot all his energy going for a ko, and having nothing left in the late rounds when necessary. For example in 1920 a less than top shape dempsey couldn't put
Bill Brennan away in an early round ,was rocked a few times, but bided his time until the 12th round of a hectic fray at MSG, when he flattened Brennan with a one-two punch ,breaking Brennan's ankle falling to the floor...So he showed late round power cause he knew enough to pace himself...And in the Tommy Gibbons fight in a hot afternoon sun in 1923
Dempsey who hadn't fought in TWO years went 15 fast rounds against a master boxer Tommy Gibbons and outboxed Gibbons handily for a decision.
Dempsey tried for a quick knockout in every fight, and had 25 one round kos, but knew how to pace himself for the long haul if necessary.
Even in his next to last bout with a PRIME Jack Sharkey in 1927, the old rusty Dempsey ,a shadow of himself, slowly wore down Sharkey with
body blows , after taking many hard shots from Sharkey, and kod Sharkey
in the 7th round...Dempsey was not a Rocky Graziano, but was a wily fighter when he had to be...Cheers.

Haha slowly wore down? You really believe that burt? The only thing Dempsey wore Sharkey down with was shots to the nut sack....Sharkey should have been the winner over Dempsey, by disqualification. Dempsey was way behind on the cards, almost got knocked out in the first round, was getting easily outboxed and had no shot at winning the fight...so Dempsey began hitting sharkey low...like andrew golota...The left hook shouldn't have mattered because right before that, Dempsey drove a 2 punch combination into Sharkey's balls

S, only in your own mind...The last i read it says Dempsey kos Jack Sharkey in the 7th round, July 21, 1927...Oh, you must have a different record book !
Dempsey wore Sharkey down by attrition with his body shots, as the old rusty Dempsey no longer had the oldtime speed to cope with a PRIME
TWENTY FIVE year old Sharkey...I have watched those films a hundred times, and nowhere does it show Dempsey hitting Sharkey in the scrotum [refined word]. Borderline ? Maybe, but those days infighting was an art and Dempsey was the roughest, meanest guy in close, whether you like it S or not...see how Dempsey's piston body shots were taking it's toll...
P.S. In all the years following Sharkey's retirement , he never gave any excuse for the ko, by Dempsey...NEVER.. But he did say in answer to a query of "who would win between Dempsey and Louis " ? Sharkey answered
"Put them boith in a telephone booth and Dempsey walks out ".
P.S. Don't compare Andrew Gulota's obvious blatant shots to the nuts of
    his opponent...
P.P.S. what about at the end of the 4th or 5th round, after the bell ended the round Sharkey wacked Dempsey in the kisser,as Jack was walking to his corner, with his hands at his side...? No comment S ? Dempsey never uttered a complaint, cause HE WAS A FIGHTER....Cheers.

Yes Dempsey and Marciano were dirty. It happens. Dempsey just didn't fight a lot of fights that went late. Probably had decent stamina; took out Brennan in 12.

Yes it's a book called 'fight film', I'm sure you look down on that Burt as being a new fangled poor imitation for Dempsey biased literature, no doubt

I'd say Brennan II and the Gibbons defense argue that prime Dempsey had pretty nice stamina. Jack and Tommy were both tired in the 15th round, but Jack had pretty much been making the fight most of the time from the 6th round on; all in all, he kept up a snappy pace over the course of the fight.

Dempsey-Sharkey, I thought it was a hard, competitive fight in rounds 1-4, with Sharkey having the better but taking a lot of body shots that are apt to have culmulative effect; Jack a little slower in round 5, but coming on in round 6; Sharkey distressed, agrieved and Ko'd in round 7. Although I thought Sharkey ahead going into round 7, he'd taken a lot of punishment of the sort that can make a guy fade, so I thought it was still anyones fight.

    Thank you, Burt!

Your perspective is unique, simply from your historically-spanning vantage point.

But that's not all: as befits a man of your experience, you know what is going on in the ring and you tell it like it is.

    Cheers!

Dempsey had no stamina problems. He was in great condition. It was Jack's M.O. to try to end a fight as quickly as possible..."The sooner the safer" was his motto and his battleplan was modeled after that but he could certainly go the distance and be effective and dangerous late in a fight if need be. A good analogy would be someone like Jack Johmson. He liked to take his time and fight a fight at his own pace and on his own terms but that doesn't mean he couldn't end things quickly, it just wasn't his preferred way of going about it. Dempsey was probably most dangerous early as he wanted to end things early but that doesn't mean he wasn't dangerous late in a fight either...because he certainly was.

Very cute PP but no CIGAR ! I have been watching fight films since you were not even born...And you in your damn hatred of Dempsey [ yes i said hatred] knows no bounds...Why at my stage in life i even bother to correct your obvious bias i do not know except i have a visceral love for the truth .
Before there was TV we had screen size boxing films of old fights such as Kings of The Ring, a 1 hr boxing film of great fights of the past...This particular film was made in the mid 1940s...We also had on Friday nights
classic fights of yesterday at the Trans Lux theatre on Bwy a few blocks from old MSG in NYC...We would go there before the Friday night weekly bouts for many years watching old fights on FULL SIZE screens...So don't
try to put me down as if I am a neophyte, whilst you are my teacher ! The fact of the matter is Jack Dempsey DID knock out Jack Sharkey with one left hook in the 7th round in 1927...The fact is that an old rusty Dempsey with only one bout in almost FOUR YEARS weakened Sharkey with powerful blows to the abdomen, after absorbing hard combos from a prime Jack Dempsey...Dempsey could take hard punches and carry on until Sharkey was weakened and the films show this whether you like it or not...At most in the earlier rounds Dempsey would have lost a point or two is academic because there was no decision rendered, but a vicious left hook in the 7th round..Sharkey was out cold and the thousands of people at the fight were not outraged at the violent end as YOU ARE PP, cause they witnessed the bout, whilst you have an agenda to demean the legacy of a great natural fighter and a decent man who was beloved as a citizen after he retired...So PP I know a tad more than you about fight "films " AND i HAVE NO AGENDA but historical truth and I revere brave and great fighters who shed their blood to entertain us, yes EVEN if their name is Jack Dempsey...Have a good day !
