i don't see any issue with dempsey's stamina standing alone but in the ring with bigger stronger men the smaller man will tire quicker. So in a fantasy match with, say, liston or ali, if he can't take them out early and they are landing and muscling clinches, it is obvious he will need truly exceptional stamina to remain physically competitive late into a 15 rounder

You say this all the time and I believe you believe it but simply are ignorant to the facts ... have you ever watched the entire fight ? Sharkey was winning the battle but losing the war .. Dempsey was wearing him down. Dempsey survived some rocky moments against a better fighter than your idol ever fought but came back to start pounding him hard ... Sharkey was ahead on points but was tiring while Dempsey was still full throttle pounding away ... it was actually an amazing performance by an old Dempsey against the best Sharkey there ever was ..

Uh huh, the old hard emotions come out of you when the threads completely off topic to him.

Dempsey was losing. Amazing performance while losing. Says something about bias or our standards of Dempsey. We can talk about Sharkey tiring as much as we want. Dempsey finished him with a low blow to the balls. There's hardly anything to marvel about this fight or performance from Dempsey unless you are clearly trying to. Yes he was a tough and rough customer. Since you brought him up, I'm sure Marciano could have came out of retirement and beaten that Sharkey if he was allowed to blast at his balls.

PtP You are distorting history...Sharkey was not hit in the "balls". Some blows were borderline at WORST, no matter how it hurts you...Why was there no outrage after the fight / why did not Dempsey lose any points / If Dempsey did lose a point, the outcome would have been the same...Why did Sharkey not complain after the ko loss if he was hit in the Balls ? For your info though it is hard to digest for you, Dempsey rusty as hell wore down Sharkey with both hands to the pit of the stomache...Watch the film with unbiased eyes and you will see Dempsey wearing Sharkey down after taking everything that the young prime Sharkey threw, and finally koing the Boston Gob with one left-hook...There have been thousands of body shots thrown in the same area that Dempsey landed by multitudes of fighters in history, and the fights continued after the blows...Get over that
revisionism ...It's over 85 years ago since that bout and accept it...
Sharkey did, and he called Dempsey the greatest heavyweight he ever fought, and i believe he knew a tad more than you did...

from the footage i find it impossible to tell if those body shots were low. however if a heavyweight hits you in the old fashioned version of a cup(did they use anything?) you probably wont be on your feet long enough to take a punch to the jaw.

God knows Marciano never fouled anybody.

Dempsey had terrific stamina. I see no reason to doubt it.

Anyone who say Dempsey beat Sharkey 'because of fouls' is really stretching it. That's giving Sharkey a complete pass and alibi. It's as wrong as saying Dempsey won it totally clean.
The truth lies somewhere in between.

I strongly suspect if the shoe was on the other foot - if Dempsey had been hit in the body and/or balls by a resurging Sharkey, and then decked by a shot to the chin, and the referee was counting to ten over him - Dempsey would have been getting up and fighting back, not rolling around on the ground trying for the 'win on a foul'.

I'd have more sympathy for Jack Sharkey if he was a clean fighter himself. He wasn't. Both those guys were rough sons-of-bitches.

Appreciate your point but simply disagree ... the fight was progressing and the older man was exerting his will on the younger fighter ... watch the fight ... Sharkey was wearing down, no question about it .. Dempsey was showing a ton of stamina, grit and heart and by weathering the early storms and hanging tough ... in many ways it was one of his best performances ... it shows more of what he could have been against top opposition in his own prime if he continued to fight with frequency and improve ..with regards to the ending, it is not proven either way ... only emotions could prompt so definitive a response from you with such inconclusive footage ... as far as old emotions go, I have no idea what you are referring to regarding me as I am one of the last to romantize any of these guys .. I like them all but punt none on pedestals .. notice , no shrines as an avatar w me ... by design ..

why can't he have good stamina AND have knocked out sharkey with a punch to the balls?
