He would KO him faster than Willard, who as a stationary, giant target could view the punches coming and brace himself for their impact. Tunney, the water bug, would undoubtably run into a jolting left or two with all his skittish "footwork". And in 1919, Tunney stays down and out.
I'll re-watch the fight and reevaluate. While what you say me be true I don't see how it should underscore the foul, especially since Dempsey was losing at that point of the fight. Your point is fair nevertheless. As for Burt. Alright, it could happen. But these are two different incidents. Dempsey finished his shot with a left hook to the jaw after the foul. Max was dropped from the low-blow shot instantly. More credence to the disparity or severity of such a foul... I don't know. I am not sure that's completely relevant. The biggest difference through was that Dempsey was such a crowd favorite and hero. We can still examine the affects of that today. Also, the ref in the Sharkey-Schemling fight seemed keen on examining the situation. The one for the Dempsey bout instantly counted. I don't see why the NY state would go against that, particularly when seeing the roaring crowd cheer on Dempsey. Sharkey claims he was hit low, so if you persist that Dempsey didn't foul him then you must believe Sharkey is fibbing. Alright haven't re-watched the whole fight yet but the foul wasn't quite as bad as I recalled. It's Sharkey reaction that really makes an imprint. Dempsey still KOed him on the break LoL.
Pete, glad you came around...Let's be clear there were no overt shots to the balls...Borderline ? Could be but there were no outcries from the crowd, Dempsey never lost a point or a round, Sharkey was being gradually weakened by Dempsey's powerful two handed body punches and it was apparent that the end was coming soon. When Sharkey turned to the referee for help Dempsey hiy him with that left hook ending the bout... As Dempsey replied to the left hook, "what was i supposed to do, send him a telegraph" ? In those days body punching was much more prevelant than today... P.S. Sharkey had ALL the tools in his arsenal except for his psychological faults. Four years later he would be "kod" by Primo Carnera in an ending very controversial....Give the old rusty 32 year Dempsey his due...No one was ever tougher, and he asked no quarters, and he gave no quarters...:good
