If Robert De Niro belongs in the 'Boxing Hall of Fame',

Then Sonny Liston should get a "Star" on 'Hollywood's Walk of Fame'

if stallone got in for ****ing rocky then of course de niro should be too. unless stallone got in for making boxing look like an amatuer bloodsport, in which case de niro's film was too good to qualify

p.s the h.o.f put sly in for publicity reasons only so expect de niro to be invited on a quiet year anyway

 

To me, the only folks that belong in the Boxing Hall of Fame are, of course, top fighters, great trainers, and excellent journalists like Bert Sugar that spent a lifetime writing about, commenting on and promoting the sport of boxing.

Not taking nothing away from DeNiro with his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull", but he is just an actor playing a role, nothing more.

Stalone did a nice job with "Rocky" and I believe he got more than a few folks to gyms after watching that movie, but I've never heard a champion say "I owe my success to seeing Rocky and that motivated me to become a champion." No way in hell he belongs in such elite company.

 

Rocky was fiction that was inspired by real life. Stallone was inspired by Chuck Wepner's bravery vs. Ali. Wepner almost lasted the entire 15 rounds with Ali and he had Ali down... even though he stepped on his foot and hit him to do so. Joe Frazier was known to punch meat and he moved to Philly prior to turning pro. I forget what fight the "cut me Mick" part was inspired from. Obviously Rocky Marciano, who get's mentioned in Rocky V (the worst of the series IMO). In Rocky III he did the charity match vs. Thunder Lips (Hulk Hogan)... several guys did the boxer vs. wrestler thing (Wepner vs. Andre, Ali vs. Monsoon and Inoki for example).

Anyway, Rocky was a great movie even if it was "over the top" lol in some scenes. Say what you will but Rocky inspired a lot of people to get interested in boxing and physical fitness in general. Vinny Pazienza admits that Rocky inspired him to be a fighter.

Yes, there should be a statue of Frazier in Philly but people love the Rocky statue... somebody is getting their picture taken with it right now I guarantee it!

 

If Sylvester Stallone stopped at 'Rocky',

I would have respected him more.

But he turned the whole premise of Rocky, into a 'big screen joke'.

And Stallone never even 'consulted' with Chuck Wepner for background information,
or offering him a small role in the film, even a minor 'bit-part' in one scene.

 

Stallone got in because he created a character that, for good or ill, is the go-to image for boxing in the minds of the general, non-boxing population. DeNiro played a real life, actual fighter. It's not about quality of performance or film, it's about some kind of contribution to the sport and it's image. Playing an actual boxer in a biography on his life isn't on the same level as creating an iconic, cultural figure that represents boxing to some degree (not that Stallone should be in anyway, but it's at least understandable. DeNiro wouldn't make any damn sense).

i feel this too about the movie, Rocky was a good believable story, the rest were exploiting the interest. Stallone "the actor" has nothing to do with boxing and shouldn't be in the Hall. But I suppose the Halls also looking for "capital" draw and trying to raise the interest, Boxing IS dying after all!

Doesn't Robert De Niro get enough 'friggin awards' for portraying someone else.

 

Rocky was more iconic than Raging Bull. Raging Bull was a good movie, but not enough to get Deniro in the Hall of Fame. I honestly would not think much about actors in the Hall of Fame for a movie, but in Stallone's case I do. He changed everything and made people think about boxing for years and years.
