December 21st in Krasnoyarsk. The vacant WBC Silver cruiserweight title (most recently held by Ilunga Makabu) will be at stake.

Lebedev officially retired from the sport this past summer, but very shortly thereafter was rumored to be in talks (spanning from September through October) for one more fight with Makabu. He instead finds himself in with Makabu's onetime conquest and fellow African, who is riding a two fight win streak, including avenging his controversial most recent defeat (via MD against countryman Tommy Oosthuizen).

Mchunu is rated #10 by the WBC. Lebedev was dropped from the rankings upon retirement.

Both men are southpaws and both stand 5'11". Lebedev has 71½″ reach, and Mchunu has one inch on him.

I'm kind of bummed this is who Lebedev's comeback opponent ended up being. I really like both guys and want to see Lebedev retire on a big win (his last important one being Victor Emilio Ramírez in 2016, prior to Lebedev being defeated by Murat Gassiev) - but preferably not at the expense of Mchunu's current momentum as rebuilding contender.

Lebedev hasn't fought anyone of note in ages now.

If Lebedev wins he could be called up for that vacant title with Makabu. So he might get his wish. Shame it'll likely end in a vicious KO loss.

I doubt it, Lebedev would most likely win that by stoppage. I say that as a fanboy of Makabu. Even at this age, I can't see Lebedev's chin failing him. Papin and Kudryashov both had Makabu badly hurt. If Lebedev stuns him, he'll probably polish him off. Granted there is a chance he goes the B-Hop route, but if he gets a Mchunu match under his belt, who's a southpaw like Makabu, I think he could pull it off.

Lebedev vs. Mchunu could end up being a close back and forth tactical borefest, both prefer staying on the backfoot and are counter punchers by nature, it might end up looking like Lara-Trout. If its back and forth, Lebedev will get the nod. Hopefully he's a little more aggressive here and scores the stoppage, I don't want to see Denis having a controversial win on his ledger this late in his career.

He could, but let's remember how powerful Papin and Kudryashov are. Lebedev has pop but Makabu has a good chin to withstand punishment from those killers. The main way I see Lebedev being stopped is a savage liver shot. Makabu could box to a decision too seeing as he has slickness in his arsenal. It's an interesting prospect nonetheless, I invite it for my viewing pleasure.

Not really, his chin is pretty poor, it's just that Papin and Kudryashov are woefully inaccurate and Makabu's defense is on point. Ledebev isn't as inaccurate and has the advantage of being a southpaw, so he can land shots on Makabu they couldn't. Hell, Mchunu almost had him out of there, Lebedev if he hurts him, he probably finishes him.

I don't doubt Lebedev could finish Makabu, he just has to hurt him badly first. It's not that easy since once Makabu gauges how vulnerable he is to your power shots he pulls back intelligently and waits for opportunities to pounce. His chin is definitely crackable but I think it's pretty decent, it always seems to happen early and when he's confident when he gets hurt so maybe Denis can lure him in that way. I reckon it'll have to be Bellew-esque in its finish if he wants to close the show on Makabu.

Hell I thought Papin could have had the beating of Makabu with that almighty chin of his combined with his power. He put up a hell of a fight, god I loved that one.

If it weren't for that damned KD< he'd have probably pulled out the draw. Yeah, that was a hell of a match.

It's between that and the Kudryashov fight for my unheralded FOTY. This is why one must love Makabu. Papin made a big fan out of me too, he's not all hype after all. That very late KD really did take that away from him and he held up from some serious shots at that point. The fact he didn't get KO'd is a marvel in itself.

Also, it was damned impressive from both men, since they were both horribly gassed to the point where they could barely stand from the 6th on, its actually shocking it saw the final bell.

Yeah it was actually hilarious both were puffing badly and they still kept going to war eating some serious leather with both being rocked multiple times. The heart on display was something else.
