Jonathan Esquivel vs. Sergio Lucio González, 6 rounds @ middleweight

 

Round 1

González is throwing high spearing shots at the head from a crouch, letting the right hand soar and following with his feet wherever it carries him. Esquivel is circling rapidly and throwing southpaw 1-2s and using double-armed feints. Esquivel down, slip (although González raises his arms as if to take credit). Esquivel is leading with left hands and smacking González on the cheek with right hooks while easily dodging his sloppy power attacks up top by just standing upright and leaning a bit to either side. Double right hook near the kidney by Esquivel as González is jogging laterally by the ropes and partially turning away. González down from a mid-range hook/straight combo. González up and scrapping, but Esquivel still turning him and landing better stuff.

Round 2

González is walking into jabs and wrapping his arms hilt to elbow around Esquivel's waist. Esquivel is whipping in fat quick right hooks on the body from outside and tossing left hands up top, González ducking them and clinching. Esquivel scouts this move a few times and then clobbers González with a downward ax-chop of a left hand as the Mexican is diving in. Down he goes, again near the bell to end the round.

Round 3

González is literally shoving his way in, driving his forearms through Esquivel's guard and into his face, knocking him into a reverse stagger with them. Esquivel finds his footing and smashes González in the face with a 1-2. Esquivel now slashing at the body with right hooks. González is wailing away up top, punching chaotically and missing with his reach-for-the-rafters swings. Esquivel drops him with another left while being shoved & windmilled into a corner, and the ref has seen enough.

So far the only 'prospect' that has really impressed me tonight is "Bang-Bang Lulu" Hawton (and she's 33 years old; debuted in 2014 a week before her twenty-ninth birthday)

Ramos...White...Esquivel - meh.

I guess Loeffler needs guys on the roster to pad out his undercards, though.

 

Sergey Bohachuk vs. César Soriano Berumen, 6 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Round 1

Bohachuk is jabbing in, head to body and up again. Bohachuk is throwing hard long rights into the body and hooking on the other side, then a big 1-2-2 up top and Berumen is down less than a minute in!! Berumen up but cautiously flurrying up top while skittering away from the vicious body combos of Bohachuk. Stiff jabs on the navel from Bohachuk, even those causing Berumen to wince & flee. Bohachuk is jabbing into the pinky edge of Berumen's left glove, leaving the hand immobilized and preventing him from even mustering a jab of his own. Bohachuk working off his stiff body & head jab and scores a quick left hook strapped across the brow of Berumen, dropping him again. Saved by the bell.

Round 2

Bohachuk is going in for the kill, jabbing into the guard to freeze Berumen up and then sending rights down the luge into the gut or boomeranging hooks around the guard. Berumen rocked into the ropes numerous times, but able to repeatedly double-jab his way out to center ring over the Cerveza Tecate logo. Bohachuk starts putting together right uppercut & left hook combos on the body and Berumen can't stand them. Down to a knee. Jack Reiss waves it off.

That was the 14th stoppage loss in Berumen's two-decade career, and he turned 40 in April, making his pro debut when Bohachuk was a toddler - so not a stop-the-presses type of result, but he was pretty active this year, fought thrice already including a pair of what you might term "upset" draws (with Al Haymon managed Javontae Starks and 17-1 Texan prospect "Cracking" Craig Callahan), with the loss coming against former world rated Tommy Browne.

The way he took him out was commendable, though. Never let him into the fight, just systematically destroyed him in a very disciplined & workmanlike manner.

 

Brian Ceballo vs. Adan Ahumada, 4 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

Ceballo is sticking the jab and threatening with a right cross, just barely missing with it when Ahumada dives in to poke a right on the body, then pulls out. Ceballo is driving Ahumada back across the ring with straight combos. Ahumada fighting nervously, coming in low and taking roundhouse swipes at the body and then holding. Ceballo is holding out his left glove to stem off Ahumada's low rush, pushing his palm into Ahumada's forehead to keep him inert, then slapping in a long right hand downstairs.

Round 2

Ceballo is putting together longer combos now, adding the left hook onto his 1-2 and knocking the bottom of Ahumada's beard up to point over his left shoulder. Ahumada being jerked around violently as Ceballo starts landing power shots at will coming forward. Ahumada eating uppercuts when he dives in for a quick touch on the body. Ahumada into a Philly shell and dancing away, then comes sidling in from the flank aiming high with a right hand. Ceballo drives him off, jousting in with a hard trotting jab.

Round 3

Ceballo is tripling and quadrupling up on his jab, not letting Ahumada get near him or get comfortable on the outside. Ahumada is game, changing directions after every rotation or two around the ring and trying different things coming in, crouching, jabbing, diving straight in with harpooning rights on the body or no-look overhands up top. No matter what Ceballo is able to lay the jab on him on the way in and then pepper him with combos to back him into the ropes. Looping right by Ahumada, landing but countered with a double jab and right cross. Ceballo throwing pot shot right hand leads now from outside and scoring.
