There's no round besides the 5th that I could see making even a flimsy case for Suárez.

 

Always the b-side and he doesn't fit the stereotypical mold people subconsciously expect of a Russian boxer - falling into either of two distinct and diametrically opposed categories: the smasher blocking punches with his face, ie the Ivan Drago/Ruslan Provodnikov/Magomed Abdusalamov/Dmitry Kudryashov type; or the more technical & mobile point-scoring, arm-punching stylist like Andrey Klimov or Dmitry Mikhaylenko. What some people (read: casuals, ie 90% of boxing fans) don't realize in their little pea brains is that most top-level pro boxers from Russia have a hybridized style that lands somewhere in the middle, like Gassiev or Kovalev or Lebedev, from years of having to hone some versatility stylistically just to disintguish themselves from all the chaff in the very deep Russian amateur program. If you aren't on that elite tier, however, and/or don't have major promotional backing and high visibility, fans & judges are inclined to prejudge Russian boxers as needing to fit in either of those aforementioned typecasts. So you put a skilled body-snatching pressure fighter like Shafikov in front of them and he doesn't receive a fraction of the credit he would if he were American. They assume he's either trying and failing to be a technical boxer and just shitting the bed defensively, or they view him as some wannabe KO artist with too little power to end a contest in one blow and and too low a workrate to quite be a swarmer.
